Outdoor Recess Guidelines
Now that the weather is finally cold, I wanted to share the HCPSS Weather
Guidelines for Recess.
In summary, students will go outdoors unless the temperature and/or wind chill is 20
degrees or less. Please be sure to dress your children warmly, including gloves and
hats. We cannot accommodate parent requests for children to stay indoors unless
accompanied by a note from your medical provider.
Thank you for your attention to cold weather gear for your children.
Additionally, if your child leaves any clothing at school, it often ends up in our lost
and found bin. Please encourage your child to check this bin if anything becomes
lost.
Winter Parent-Teacher Conferences
Math parent-teacher conferences will take place on the afternoon and evening of
February 4th and the morning of February 5th. Specific information about signing up

RECC Applications for 2015-2016 school year
The Ilchester Regional Early Childhood Center (RECC) preschool programs will soon be accepting applications for classes for
the 2016-2017 school year. These classes include children with and without disabilities. The program’s focus is helping all
children develop communication, literacy, math, problem solving, motor, and social skills. Parents of children who will be 3 and
4 years of age for the 2016-2017 school year may pick up an application in the school office beginning February 16, 2016.
All applications must be returned by March 22, 2016. A limited number of openings are available for children without
disabilities. Children are selected based upon screening information given on the application form and the “Ages and Stages
Questionnaire,” as well as observations of the child’s participation in a playgroup. If necessary, a lottery process is
conducted.
If you have any questions, please contact Ashley Murphy at ashley_murphy@hcpss.org or 410-313-2524.
Here's what is going on in Third Grade:
Third grade is busy with their biography research unit. Students chose to research people who have shown determination by
overcoming barriers or challenges in their lives. Third graders will be doing a research report and an oral presentation to share

in the third grade classrooms. Be on the look out for a schedule to be sent out by your child's homeroom teacher.

MUSIC NEWS
Congratulations to our Fourth and Fifth Grade Choruses:
We would like to congratulate our Fourth and Fifth Grade Choruses on their terrific performances this week on Tuesday,
January 12th and Wednesday, January 13th. Both groups worked hard and performed superbly. Mr. Wilson and Mrs.
Maglocci couldn't be prouder of our fine musicians. Congratulations! All your hard work really paid off.
Third Graders get to perform with Artist in Residence:
Beginning on Monday, January 4th, our school was able to see an amazing assembly by the band, Rock Creek Steel Drums.
During the week, the third graders were able to work closely with our artist in residence, Kevin Martin, learning to play songs
and different aspects of the steel drums. Mr. Martin makes his own steel drums on the Eastern shore and has developed his
own unique method for teaching students to play the instrument. Each student was able to play his/her own steel drum and
each class had four separate thirty minute instructional periods with the artist. During this time there was much excitement,
laughter, and of course, lots of music making learning going on. At the end of the week, the third grade performed on their own
assembly for the first and second graders under the direction of Mr. Martin. We would like to thank the PTA for providing the
funds for this unique and special experience for our students, and especially to Mrs. Kelly Green for writing the grants to make
this experience possible.
Fifth Grade Chorus Invited to Perform at State Music Conference:
We are very honored that Ilchester's very own Fifth Grade Chorus has been invited to perform at the Maryland Music Educator
Association's State Conference in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, February 20th. We are the only Elementary School
Chorus that has been invited to perform and we know that our fantastic students will make us very proud. If you see a fifth
grader, be sure to wish the best of luck on this wonderful opportunity.
Ilchester's Fourth and Fifth Grade Musical is Announced:
Drum roll please..............and this year's musical will be: THE LION KING. Because our musicals are really gaining popularity
and seating is becoming quite a premium, we are doubling up on our performances. Fourth grade performances will be 5/11
and 5/13. Fifth grade performances will be 5/10 and 5/12. Information packets will be coming home soon in the Friday folders
soon, so stay tuned.
New Cantus Choir Members Added:
Howard County Children's Chorus has added a new younger chorus for second and third graders from around the county.
Ilchester could send just five students and they are Samantha Bowles, Danica Cooper, Krish Dube, Zachary Fader, and
Jennifer Tom. The Cantus Choir is in addition to the auditioned Lyric Choir that is for fourth and fifth graders from around the
county. Congratulations to our newest and talented members.
Counselor’s Corner
Happy New Year! January is the month for setting new goals you wish to accomplish in the upcoming months! Our Social
Goal this month is to introduce the primary students to a new word called “Reputation”. We are learning that it means a
collection of qualities that helps people know things about me and helps me know things about others. We will use a story
called Nelly, That’s not nice! In this story, Nelly the Naught Newt is habitually less than honest and as a result is accused of
wrongdoing even when she’s blameless. The intermediate classes are wrapping up with the concept of Mindset (our attitudes,
thoughts and beliefs about something). They will reflect on how one’s mindset relates to one’s reputation. Please take a few
minutes with your child to discuss the value of a good “Reputation” and Growth-Mindset.

Public Information Office
Important notice: Clarification of Policy regarding distribution of print flyers and notices
Recently, some schools have notified organizations that printed materials will no longer be accepted for
distribution through student backpacks, etc. Please be aware that HCPSS Policy 10010 (Distribution and
Display of Materials & Announcements) specifies that community organizations may choose to distribute
printed flyers, etc. via schools as long as they comply with the policy requirements (i.e. non-profit
status, gaining pre-approval, providing sufficient copies of the documents, etc.) Thus, schools must
agree to distribute printed materials that have been pre-approved by the Public Information Office,
in accordance with this policy.
The Public Information Office values schools' efforts to reduce paper, and encourages organizations to
choose electronic distribution when feasible. Please contact the Public Information Office with any
questions, at 410-313-6682 or publicinfo@hcpss.org.
The following announcements have been approved by the Public Information Office for school notices and distribution.
Please feel free to contact the Public Information Office at 410-313-6682 if you have any questions.
Schools may publish any or all of the following announcements in their school newsletters when time and space permit.
These notices should be clearly identified as “Community Notices” and preceded by a statement indicating that the events
are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Howard County Public School System.
