Just send them in to Ms. Stumpe to distribute! Assignments/Tests 7th Grade English (Ms. Cassmeyer) Welcome to the new school year! In English class, the 7th graders are hard at work on a short stories unit. We are identifying the elements of plot and finding foreshadowing and personification in the suspenseful short story "Riki-Tiki-Tavi. Our grammar lessons find us reviewing nouns and creating a Nouns Map where we get to design our own real or imagined place that is teeming with nouns. Finally, we have successfully completed two weeks of spelling activities. Remind your students that spelling assignments are due every Thursday, followed by a test on Friday. Please feel free to contact me at cassmeyern@fatimacomets.org. 7th Reading (Mrs. Rolwes) We are busy in Reading Class! We have begun the semester by learning about all the different aspects of fiction novels, including setting, plot, conflict, literary elements and genres. The students have had to take many notes, but they should have all the information they will need for most of the reading we will do throughout the semester. Students will be required to independently read one fiction AR book and one nonfiction book this semester. They must take an AR test on the fiction book and then complete reading worksheet as well. Students have chosen books from the library and have been give some class time to read. We will begin reading a mystery novel together as a class called The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. Students will have the opportunity to make corrections to homework, quizzes and tests as long as work is turned in on time, and they should take advantage of this opportunity! Please contact me at any time if you have any questions. The best and quickest way to reach me is through my e-mail address at rolwesk@fatimacomets.org, or you can also leave a voice mail message at 455-2375 ext. 179. 7th Grade Math (Mrs. K. Stegeman) The students are learning to be a little less chatty. We had a quiz last Friday and we have one again this Friday. If you sent your email to me, I will try to do a better job of reminding you of quizzes. They are enjoying being able to use their calculators for the first time! I tutor every day after school until 4. Kris Stegeman stegemank@fatimacomets.org 7th Grade Pre-Algebra (Mrs. Kesel) 8th Grade English (Mrs. Bish) Students are off to a good start so far this year. We are well acquainted now, and the students are learning the rules of the classroom and homeroom. We are now a little more than half way through our first chapter and I anticipate our test will be the Friday after Labor Day. Thank you to all of those who have sent in dry-erase markers; we’ve already used the marker boards several times in class. Students always enjoy doing their “homework” this way, and I like it because I am able to give them instant feedback. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at kesell@fatimacomets.org. The eight graders have just finished the unit and taken a test over Study Skills. They learned tips ranging from how to take notes and use the library, how to avoid plagiarism, to how to study for and take tests and quizzes. We don’t have a spelling book this year. Words for vocabulary/spelling will be taken from the literature section that we are studying. Our first words are being taken from “The American Folk Tradition” unit. Students will have to know the definition, synonym, antonym, and spelling of each word. Vocabulary/spelling quizzes will generally be on Fridays. In “The American Folk Tradition” unit we will read and study myths, legends, and tall tales that are American in origin. Students will also be asked to write an original myth that explains how something came to be. Each eighth grader should have a monthly calendar for English 8 that tells him/her what we are doing each day and what assignment is due on a particular day. Please ask to see the English calendar so you will also have an idea when we are having a quiz or test. 8th Grade Pre-Algebra (Mrs. Kesel) This year in Pre-Algebra I am putting a lot of effort into teaching vocabulary. I feel that in order for students to truly understand what assignment directions and test questions are asking them to do, they must have a good grasp on math vocabulary. To that end we will spend some time at the beginning of each chapter discussing all of the vocab words for that chapter and making flash cards with definitions written by the class in terms we ALL understand (even me!). These cards are kept on a binder ring, and we will add more cards each chapter. Students are encouraged to use the cards during class and while doing homework assignments. Thank you to everyone who has sent in dry-erase markers. We will use the marker boards often during the course of the year. The students prefer writing on the boards to doing pencil and paper work; and I am able to instantly see which students are having trouble, and provide extra help. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at kesell@fatimacomets.org. 8th Grade Computers (Mrs. Temmen) Students are learning the "touch" method of keyboarding which means they do not look at their hands. Students need to practice good keyboarding technique at home and next week the students will get a sheet to earn bonus points if they practice at home. Parent's signature is required to earn the bonus points. Bonus sheets are due Tuesday of each week. Also, the students are creating a career PowerPoint. They will have to research 2 careers. Ask your child what careers he/she is researching. 8th Grade Reading (Mrs. Bish) The eighth grade reading class this year is only a semester long. We will go through the basic elements of reading the first term, read Flush by Carl Hiaasen the second term, and read Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick the third term. This first term the eighth graders are reviewing and studying the basic elements of the short story, novel, and drama. We are taking notes and doing worksheets to reinforce those elements. Each reading student should have a monthly calendar for Reading 8 that tells him/her what we are doing each day, when we have quizzes and tests, and what assignments are due on a particular day. Please ask your eighth grader to share this with you so that you have an idea of what we are doing in reading class. Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.
