DATE: BLOCK: Wednesday, March 25, 2015 1 (AP Lit & Comp) WORK COLLECTED/CHECKED/DUE: 1. None CLASSWORK: 1. Standardized Quiz #1 (Rebecca Houston needs to make up next week) 2. Question of the Day sheet for the week of March 23, 2015 (#58) Why do people believe the guards killed King Duncan? 3. Daily Edits Set #8 , sentence #3 (#60) Pronoun-antecedent agreement: singular pronouns go with singular nouns, and plural pronouns go with plural nouns “Everyone,” “everybody,” “someone,” and “somebody” are ALL singular words “None of us are going to the party tonight.” “None” is a contraction for “Not one” “us” is NOT the subject of the sentence, as it is the object of the preposition “of.” Therefore, this sentence is WRONG. “None of us is going to the party tonight.” 4. Macbeth performances I.i (three witches: Rebecca, Mark, and Julia M) I.ii.1-78 (Emily as Duncan, Paige as Malcolm, Mr. Reiff as Captain, Danielle as Lennox, and Katie as Ross) I.iii.1-92 (First Witch, Second Witch, Third Witch, Mr. Reiff as Macbeth, and Meagan as Banquo) I.v.1-86 (Abbey as Lady Macbeth (soliloquy), Messenger, and Macbeth) I.vi (Duncan, Banquo, and Lady Macbeth): not performed I.vii.1-96 (Mr. Reiff as Macbeth and Abbey as Lady Macbeth 5. Macbeth performances II.iii.1-172 (DVD of the Porter Scene!) (Porter, Macduff, Macbeth, Lennox, Lady Macbeth, Banquo, Malcolm, and Donalbain) The beginning of this scene is present for comic relief in the tragedy II.iii.25: Know the FOUR things that drink does to a man Nose-painting (rosacea, which is adult acne) Sleep (passed out) Urine (that was one seriously long morning wiz; imagine the “Evacuation, complete” scene from Austin Powers) Lechery (again, a reference to Austin Powers: Do I make you horny, baby??). Yes, you may WANT to perform, but, since alcohol is a depressant, you won't be able to perform! The Porter imagines that he is the porter of hell, and, in a way, he is! Equivocation: Macbeth is being constantly pushed towards doing things. He tries to lie without lying (“Yes, the king’s PLAN is to leave today….”) II.iii.61-69: foreshadowing of the discovery (scary weather) and DARKNESS! Macduff discovers Duncan’s body. Macbeth, upon “discovering” the guards’ having killed Duncan, kills the guards! 6. Macbeth Act II Starred quotations Seated conversation with your DUNSINANE partner: explain Starred Quotation #12: Macbeth, playing the part of the surprised host, is asked why he killed the guards. He responds by saying that his instincts for revenge took over, even though he knows that he probably should not have killed the guards! It’s the dichotomy of human nature! Concept of fatal flaw 7. Macbeth Act III prompt: “Famous Words”: “To be thus [King] is nothing but to be safely thus.” Meet with your INVERNESS partner to discuss the handout. [Notes below are from previous sections of the course, but are relatively the same as those discussed today] What might Macbeth mean by this statement? Being a king means nothing if the king is not safe Having the title of king is no good when your throne is in jeopardy Macbeth is thinking about eliminating the competition Being a king means never being safe, as people always want the position If one is king but never feels safe, what’s the point? How might Macbeth attempt to secure his position? Yes, he could kill anyone who gets in his way. OTHER than that, he could: change laws to secure his position; banish people; get better security; control who is allowed to be in his presence; please his people by providing needed services to them; tighten his authority over people; throw people in jail; befriend his enemies: keep your friends close and your enemies closer; instill fear in others and remind people of his “heroic” actions after Duncan’s murder; make sure Malcolm & Donalbain stay out of the way. Who might pose a threat to this position? Banquo: one of only people who knows the prophecies (along with witches, Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth), AND Fleance (and descendants) is supposed to be king Malcolm & Donalbain: Malcolm is true heir to throne Fleance: meant to be king later in life Macduff: growing suspicious Lady Macbeth! She’s used to controlling him, telling him what to do, planning for him. She will think she has more power than he! The three witches: remember, they didn’t tell him the whole story! STARRED thought of the day!!!: Macbeth himself!! Paranoia and guilt could overcome him! 8. Macbeth performances III.i.1-162 (Mr. Reiff as Macbeth, Abbey as Lady Macbeth, Meagan as Banquo, Jake S as First Murderer, and Jake W as Second Murderer Note: barren (line 67). Lady Macbeth & Macbeth can’t have children!! Starred quotations III.i.1-3: Banquo says that Macbeth has everything the witches promised Macbeth, but Banquo believes that Macbeth got those things through evil means! III.i.52-55: discussed above!! III.i.103-120: Macbeth questions the manhood of the murderers in order to get them to do as he wishes, JUST AS Lady Macbeth questioned Macbeth’s manhood!! Macbeth hires the murderers to kill BOTH Banquo & Fleance What is different about the plan to take care of Banquo? Lady Macbeth is NOT involved! HANDOUTS/NOTEBOOK UPDATE: 1. Sample AP exam (#5) 2.
