TWO OF THE BOSTON YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS TO PERFORM

MAY 16 AT GRANOFF MUSIC CENTER AT TUFTS UNIVERSITY

Young People's String Orchestra and Preparatory Winds

Present Free Concert at 3 pm

BOSTON – April 19, 2010...Two of the groups that comprise the Boston Youth Symphony

Orchestras (BYSO) will perform a free concert on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the Granoff Music

Center at Tufts University. The Young People’s String Orchestra (YPSO), conducted by Marta

Zurad, and the Preparatory Winds (PW), conducted by Janet Underhill, will present this concert at

3 pm. A list of the players, with their hometowns and schools follows.

This is a free concert but you must reserve a ticket (seating is limited).

Y oung People’s String Orchestra (YPSO), conducted by Marta Zurad, is known as one of the finest children’s orchestras in the New England area. This young orchestra performs major repertoire from the standard string orchestra literature while learning the skills needed for excellent orchestral playing. It is an energetic and collaborative ensemble emphasizing teamwork and leadership development. YPSO has performed at such venues as Symphony Hall and

Boston University’s Tsai Performance Center.

The Preparatory Winds (PW), directed by Janet Underhill, is the newest ensemble of BYSO, and began its first season in 2006-2007. PW is designed to teach young wind players fundamental skills necessary for successful orchestra playing. As members of PW, students will develop basic techniques of ensemble participation, which help prepare them for future orchestra membership.

About Marta Zurad

Ms. Zurad assumed the position of Conductor of the Young People's String Orchestra and the

Intensive Community Program at the BYSO in the 2009-2010 season. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from New England Conservatory and her Graduate Diploma and Master of Music degree from Longy School of Music. She also attended the Academy of Music in Krakow, Poland.

Her violin teachers have included Wieslaw Kwasny, Valeria Kuchment, and Erik Rosenblith.

She is a very active chamber musician, and is a past participant of Yellow Barn Music Festival and Apple Hill Chamber Music Festival. She plays regularly with a number of local chamber groups, both as a violinist and a violist. She is a member of the Lexington Symphony and has performed with many other orchestras in the Boston area.

Ms. Zurad conducts the Longy Concertino and the Longy Youth Sinfonietta and has been on the string faculty there since 1993. She is also a faculty member and the founder of Summer Festival for Strings at Winchester Community Music School. She serves as an adjudicator for various local concerto competitions.

About Janet Underhill

Janet Underhill, Conductor of the Preparatory Winds, is a bassoonist, teacher and arts administrator in the Boston area. Currently she is the Director of Winds, Brass & Percussion and

Private Lessons for St. Mark’s School of Southborough, MA. She also serves as a bassoon instructor at Boston College, South Shore Conservatory, and Community Music Center of Boston.

Ms. Underhill is a founding member of Arcadian Winds, a woodwind quintet specializing in contemporary music, which has commissioned and premiered more than 50 works. Also interested in archival projects, she has developed a cataloguing system for ethnic recordings with composer Martin Bartlett, and has organized Gunther Schuller’s personal collection.

The BYSO is widely regarded as one of the country’s finest youth orchestras and is recognized nationally as a model music and arts education organization.
