CLASSWORK:
1. Question of the Day sheet for the week of May 18, 2015 (#105)
 What is VERY familiar about the creature’s killing of Henry Clerval?
[please note the choking motion that I’m making]
2. Daily Edits Set #14 review paragraph: DIDN’T DO (do not throw it out)
3. Daily Edits Set #15, sentence #1 (#106)
4. Test will be on THURSDAY, and it will a 100-point, in-class essay
5. I’ll try to give you a notebook clear-out list soon
6. Frankenstein: Frankenstein’s monster PowerPoint presentation: what happened
to this guy? [lectured today]
 How did we go from the description of the monster in the novel to referring to the
monster as Frankenstein and depicting the monster as a hulking mass of grunts?
 Molly Milligan F13 AP: “When I think of green, I think of the phrase
‘green with envy,’ and that emphasizes the creature’s relationship with
Victor.
 Gives feeling of new life (inability to speak)
 Media picks and chooses what audience likes
 More money because it’s scarier
 Makes it more exciting
 Unrealistic premise if Adam is intelligent (it’s unrealistic as it is, but that
would be stretching it too far)
 HOW people talk about the book
 People wouldn’t believe a scary monster could be intelligent
 People don’t want someone intelligent killing people. They’d prefer the
stronger, mindless monster (versus Hannibal Lecter)
 In black and white, the color of his skin wouldn’t matter
 Easier to understand (for kids and adults)
 Stereotypical inhuman monster (which is interesting since Frankenstein is the
prototypical horror story)
 The image of a monster changed over the years
 In the novel, Adam is more of a psychological monster than he is a physical
monster (he is a physical monster, as well)
 Shock factor (more entertaining); eye catching
7. Frankenstein Significant quotations #1 (#100) [lectured]
 #1: “Life…is dear to me…” (end of Chapter 10, page 84)
 Adam talking to Victor. Adam is trying to convince Victor to listen to his
story. It is ironic because Adam is not even a “real person” yet he loves life
more than Victor. Also ironic because Adam killed William!
 The world is terrible, but I want to live my life. I’m lonely. Please respect me
as I do you.
 #2: “How strange…that the same cause should produce such opposite
effects!” (first part of Chapter 11, page 88)
 The monster is telling the story to Victor. The monster is telling Victor about
finding fire. Fire was helpful because it keeps him warm, but it also hurts.
DICHOTOMY!! Could also be saying the same thing about society (he finds
society to be cruel, yet he still wants to be a part of it).
 Adam was happy when learning.
 Emily Lawson AP L&C S11: “It’s symbolic of the creature’s relationship
with the cottagers (and with society as a whole) because he can’t get too
close to them!”
 #3: “Was man, indeed, at once so powerful, so virtuous, and magnificent, yet
so vicious and base?” (middle of Chapter 13, 101)
 Adam is talking to Victor. The creature is telling the story of his
eavesdropping on Felix while he’s teaching Safie his language and history.
Adam is surprised to find so many flaws in the human species. He wonders
why Victor would bring him into this world.
 Why does man go to extremes to get ahead?
 Base: adjective; low or inferior
 Group #4: “ ‘To be friendless is indeed to be unfortunate…’” (towards the
end of Chapter 15. page 113)
 De Lacey’s conversation with the creature. De Lacey will not be able to judge
Adam by his physical appearance., but by his intellect.
8. Frankenstein questions #1 (#101)
 Do you find the creature more or less sympathetic than the character of Victor
Frankenstein? Explain.
 Keith Luterman F11: Every human has a chance to achieve his or her
goals, but Adam has no chance
 Trung Hoang F11: Victor can’t forget about his mother
 Dan Brogan F11: Victor is surrounded by death even though he knows
the secret of life
 Victor created it and knew it probably wasn’t going to go well. Victor left it
instead of teaching it. Creature was left with nothing; he’s alone!
 Involuntarily “born”: Victor should have taken more precautions
 Victor CHOSE to be alone, but Adam is forced to be alone
 Creature wants to be happy and have friends while Victor pushes everyone
away
 Creature shoulders the blame (like Justine’s mother)
 Adam is CHILDLIKE (innocent), so he’s oblivious to consequences
 People run from him: it’s not his fault, it’s Victor’s fault!

How believable is the account of the creature’s education? Refer to the book and
your own educational experience in your answer.
 Really believable:
 He has no prior knowledge
 Some people have natural ability to learn
 Fire incident: learned from experience
 Inquisitive mind
 He learned by doing
 Kind of believable:
 He’s not human!
 His ability to read (in the first place) is unbelievable, especially since he
was like a baby at that time
 Reaction to his education was believable; he’s not reading Snow White!
 Observation of people talking equals language: hard to believe!
 EXTREMELY intelligent: that’s not something people just pick up!
 No freaking way
 Learning to read involves a process (alphabet to comprehension to reading
to writing to Senior Project). He just picks up a book?
 Created from dead parts, even his brain! Logical thinking process vs.
basic motor skills
 Morals through books
 Learned through a hole in the wall (no guided practice)

Analyze the creature’s personality. In what ways is he like any human being? In
what ways is he different?
 Like humans
 Maya Larson, AP Lit & Comp S11: “In psychology, we learned that
every person has three basic wants: to be liked, to be accepted, and to
be right.”
 Curious about everything
 Feels physical and emotional pain
 Seeks companionship
 Thoughts and questions
 Wants for revenge
 DICHOTOMY
 He has evolved: COMMON SENSE! (My 10th & Diamond story)
 Different
 He has no sense of restraint
 He doesn’t understand society and his role in it
 Appearance
 Freakishly tall and strong
 Animal parts
 Sees past appearances
 View of society: learned from enlightened authors!
 No family
 First of his kind: he was created, not born

What are the positive and negative consequences of relying more on your intellect
than your emotions?
 Positives:
 Emotions cloud things
 No rash decisions
 Think things through
 Negative
 Emotions drive us to do things we normally wouldn’t do (this could be a
positive or a negative)
 Lose sight of those that care about you
 Don’t go by instinct
 Don’t express how you truly feel
 Works on paper…but… not considering other options
 Unhealthily selfless
 Smartest isn’t always best
 MY DISNEY WORLD STORY!

Key points of Chapters 20 and 21 (pages 141 to 156) [I read passages]
 142: Victor tears apart female
 143: “I shall be with you on your wedding night”
 150: Clerval’s dead! Back on 135, it was indicated that he had turned things
around. Question as to whether or not CLERVAL is Victor’s doppelganger
 154: “cup of life was poisoned”
 155: Victor considers suicide
