Available calibers include .22 Long Rifle, .25-20 Single Shot, .25 WCF, .25-21, 28-30 Stevens, .32-20, .32 Miller Short, .32-40, .33-40, 8.15X46R, .38-55, .40-65 Winchester and many others. Generally, Douglas XX barrels are used, but Badger, Shilen and others are available at extra charge. Barrels are normally up to 28" long, but are available up to 34" long. Standard barrel sizes are #2 (1.00"), #2 1/2 (1.03"), #3 (1 1/16"), #4 (1 1/8"), and #5 (1 3/16") in part octagon or round. There is an extra charge for full octagon barrels, just as there was in 1902. Barrels are low luster blued, and have polished muzzles to show grease distribution. All barrels come drilled and tapped for Unertl/Fecker/Lyman scope bases with the rear base near the frame, MVA scope bases, or for modified Weaver 63-B scope mount bases for use with internal adjustment scopes. Schuetzen rifles come with either standard scope bases or the Weaver style. A front sight slot can be provided at no extra charge for 3/8" or 7/16" sights. Front sights supplied by us can be fitted at no charge; there is a charge for fitting customer sights. There is a variety of stocks available in this model. The best offhand stock is the high comb Pope Model (shown at top). This offers good support for your face when using telescopic sights, and is copied from a typical original rifle. There is no question that this design adds points to your score and makes shooting easier. The basic design is a Stevens factory version of the radical Schoyen stocks in use after telescopes came into common use. This stock normally uses a Schoyen plate, which is available with one- or two-prongs. The Stevens Pope plate is also available, but the opening on this plate is rather small, so most people choose the Schoyen 2-prong or 1-prong plate. The 1-prong plate is highly recommended for shooters with large arms, and is superior for use in bench rest shooting. Another stock style is the Model 52 Schuetzen Junior. This is also suitable for use with iron sights and uses the more open #4 Schuetzen plate. This plate is steel with Stevens case colors, duplicating the original. If you plan on bench shooting only, we recommend the sporting stock, which offers a much straighter style with shotgun plate, or the special benchrest stock without cheekpiece with bottom of stock parallel to comb. All stocks are available in right or left hand style. The standard length of pull is 13 1/4". At no charge, this length of pull can be altered to suit the customer’s request. Customers are specifically cautioned about using long pull stocks, which are very undesirable for this style of shooting. All rifles come with the standard factory 2-screw forearm. If requested, a blank fitted forearm can be supplied, or a 3” wide forearm for bench shooting. Wood used on these stocks is figured walnut. More highly figured wood is available at advanced prices, but the standard grade is pleasing to most shooters. -1- Action Details Actions for the Schuetzen rifles are supplied with either the ball and spur or Pope lever. Both are very suitable for offhand use, or bench shooting for that matter. While the four finger loop or plain lever can be used, these are not recommended for offhand use since there is no place to locate the fingers when using an effective offhand position. Hammer spring tension can be varied using an adjusting screw in the lower tang. The Stevens action can be used to breech seat suitable bullets instead of using a mechanical breech seater. Only a case plugged with brass, or wood, is required. The action can easily be taken down for carrying or barrel switching. Only a screwdriver is required. Other barrels can be supplied, and rimfire/ centerfire breechblocks are available. Another extractor may be required. Sights With the Model 52 stock, original or reproduction tang and front sights can be used. The high comb stock requires a common sight line for both glass and iron sights. This is most effectively done by using either a tube sight or an adapter on the rear scope base for an Anschutz or Redfield type rear sight. Front sight adapters are available to mount detachable globe front sights. A tang sight may be used, but we recommend a mid- or long-range soule sight and front sight adapter to allow a higher sight line. For telescope sights, it is recommended to use an external adjusting scope of the Lyman, Fecker, or Unertl style. These are readily available used, and on a limited basis new such the Parsons Targetspot. Internal adjusting scopes can be used, but they are not period looking and are far more expensive than their actual value. If the barrel on a CPA rifle is to be removed or changed, it is a simple matter to remove a Lyman scope; if you have an internal adjustment scope, it takes longer to remove the scope and the mount base must also be removed. THE SILHOUETTE/LONG RANGE RIFLE Approved for Black Powder Cartridge Rifle (BPCR) competition by the NRA, the silhouette rifle has either a sporting style stock with low comb (shown here) or the Model 52 style with more drop, and is available in either right or left hand style. Wood used for the stock is lightly figured walnut finished with a closed pore finish, or unfinished but fitted. The bottom of the pistol grip has the classic "S" shape on the bottom of the pistol grip. The black rubber buttplate is shotgun style to minimize recoil, and has the Stevens logo. Checkered steel buttplates and Pachmayr recoil pads are available. The action normally has a ball and spur (without wood insert) lever and double set triggers. Standard barrels for silhouette rifles are either Douglas or Badger. Calibers available include 38-55, .40-65 Winchester, .45-70 and others. A popular option is a .22LR barrel for use in practice or for indoor matches. The standard barrel is a #4 part octagon style which is 30" long, weighing about 11 ½ pounds; longer barrels up to 34" long are available at no extra charge. Other barrel weights and styles are available as described for the Schuetzen rifle – a #3 size barrel will weigh about one pound less. A front sight slot is provided, as are tang -2- sight holes. The barrel normally is drilled and tapped for MVA scope bases or for target scope bases to be used in testing loads; these holes can be omitted if desired. The rifle is made to the NRA weight restriction, and meets all applicable rules. The long range rifle is similar to the silhouette rifle, but can have a heavier barrel and popular calibers include .45-70, .45-90, .45-100 and .45-110. If the gun will be used only for long range, the sporting stock is best, which has a relatively high comb. If you anticipate using the same rifle for both silhouette and long range, you will need to use the silhouette stock, which meets the NRA’s comb height restrictions. Sights These rifles usually have a globe front sight fitted into a 3/8" front dovetail. This sight should be typical of the period as specified in NRA rule 3.4. Likewise, the rear sight must meet this rule, which does not permit the use of click adjustable windage or elevation. The rear (tang) sight is attached to the top tang with 5-40 screws, which are factory standard, and the hole spacing is also factory standard (1.485"). We stock a variety of sights, including Montana Vintage Arms and Baldwin installed at no charge if purchased though us. THE BENCHREST RIFLE The Benchrest rifle has a buttstock with a high, straight comb and bottom line parallel to the bore. It also has a wide, flat-bottomed forearm to keep the rifle steady on a rest. This rifle is available in all of our standard chamberings, but the most popular calibers are .32-20 CPA, .32-40, .38-55, .25-20 and .22LR. Barrels are typically 28” long and heavy weight: #4 or #5. Barrels are drilled for scope bases and slotted for a front sight as requested. Stock through bolts are available at an extra charge. THE SPORTING/VARMINT RIFLE The Sporting and Varmint rifles use a sporting style stock, which is similar to the stock used on our silhouette rifles but with a higher comb. The sporting rifle (shown above) uses the standard factory forearm with schnabel tip, while the varmint rifle (shown below) uses a semi-beavertail forearm. These rifles are available in rimmed calibers, including .222, .225 Winchester, .22 Hornet and others. Standard barrels are round or part octagon in weights from #1 to #5 and up to 28” long. Sighting options include tang sights, Weaver or Unertlstyle scope mounts and open front and barrel sights. Other options as described for the -3- Schuetzen and Silhouette rifles are also available. We typically have a have a few rifles in stock – please contact us or visit our website at www.singleshotrifles.com/specials.html if you are interested. THE CPA ACTION The CPA action is a copy of the Stevens 44½, the final action made during the high point of the single shot rifle between the Civil War and the First World War. Less than 13,000 of these rifles were made during the period of 1902 to 1916, and they were certainly the finest of the factory single shot target rifles. All our rifles are based on the same action, which has a pistol grip and double set triggers. Straight grip actions are available by special order only. The frame, lower tang and lever are typically case colored in the original ripple style Stevens colors. All actions have heattreated breechblocks with Mann-Niedner firing pins. All firing pins are now made from high impact tool steel that is properly hardened; additionally, the firing pins are a snug fit in both the breechblock at the rear and in the retaining bushing. All competition rifles are provided with a special lightweight hammer with lower nose for cleaning rod and cartridge clearance. This hammer reduces lock time by about 40%. The top tang is tapped 5-40 for original or reproduction sights. The frame, breechblock, hammer and lever are made from 8620 investment castings. These parts are then fully machined for proper fit, and all but the lever are heat-treated. The frame is also not heat treated, but has a tensile strength of about 90 KSI after case coloring. The triggers, sear, lower tang, link and extractor are machined from solid tool steel and heat treated as required. Pins are hardened and ground, and all screws are hardened. All working parts are hardened for strength and wear resistance, so this action has a very long life expectancy. In every part used, the material and heat treatment is superior to the original. The finish provided on the parts is equivalent to the original action. The frame is somewhat thicker than the original, being about 1 1/4" thick rather than the original 44½ action's 1 1/8". This has allowed the use of somewhat larger barrel shank threads. These are 15/16-16, the same as the Winchester high wall, and larger cartridges can be used, up to the ability to load a case past the hammer. The action is guaranteed to perform as stated without limit of time to the original owner. It is guaranteed to be free of defects in workmanship and materials, and defective parts will be replaced without charge, not including return shipping charges. The working and finish are guaranteed to be suitable for the intended use. No claim is made as to special hand finishing or detailed finishing atypical of the original actions. The actions are marked with the company name and a serial number. -4- TERMS When ordering a rifle, you will receive a confirmation showing total cost, together with all the options and specifications. Please review this carefully and contact us with any changes. A deposit of $300 (or more for unusual orders) is required to validate an order. Cancellation of the order after work has started on the barrel or stock may forfeit the deposit. You will be notified when the rifle is nearly ready for shipment. At that time, the balance of payment is due, plus a signed FFL from your dealer. We accept checks, money orders, and credit cards (which are charged upon shipment). Rifles are normally shipped UPS Ground, but other options are available at extra charge. If you give us an email address, you will receive an email upon shipment with scheduled delivery date and tracking number. Due to circumstances that we cannot fully control, no delivery promise can be made, but delivery is typically 3 –4 months for rifles with unfinished wood, and 4 – 6 months for rifles with finished wood. Naturally, we like to get the rifles to you as soon as possible, since we then get paid for them. As our backlog permits, we may occasionally build rifles in anticipation of customer demand. If we have a rifle in stock or in-process which matches your specifications, this may speed your delivery. SHAPED AND INLETTED STOCKS We manufacture stocks for single shot rifles, and have been making them for over thirty – five years. In that time we have made almost 4000 buttstocks and/or forearms in a large variety of patterns and wood species. As part of this product line we also supply matching buttplates for most patterns. This product is guaranteed to be to specifications; if not, we will either replace it or refund your money. In the case of customer wood being damaged, we will replace the wood as well. Customer wood will be run complete without regard for any defects. This warranty is the best in the business, although it does not cost us very much since few stocks ever become a problem. BUTTSTOCKS The variety of our offerings covers just about all the common single shot rifles. In many cases, all of the original patterns are offered. We do not make custom stocks to mysterious styles that are not authentic to either the original period or the classic period of the 19301940s. If you want a Klingon death ray style stock for your single shot rifle, please pass us by. Our buttstocks are fully shaped and are exact copies of the originals. Variations can be made in length of pull or the addition of certain features: see the price list for details. The buttplate area is machined for the proper plate or left uncut at no extra charge. Inletting is 95% complete; completion varies somewhat according to the action and its inherent variation. Stocks can be fitted by anyone with some experience. The inletting can be done by us, but it is suggested that the purchaser do his own for reasons of economy. Finishing and checkering are also available at prices that are reasonable for the amount and quality of the work involved. Where the original actions had drawbolts for securing the frame to the buttstock, we also bore the holes for these bolts. For Ballard actions, the round section of the tang extension is inletted. We have additional patterns available. These are for low volume styles such as the Falling Block Works. Contact us for information on patterns that you are interested in. We -5- will also make new patterns as time permits, but only if such a pattern would be a reasonable seller. We already have over 100 patterns in our collection. Checkering patterns are available with stocks that were originally checkered and also for some that were checkered on special order. Customer stocks can be used for patterns. There is a setup charge for this service. There will generally be no damage to the original stock. FOREARMS Almost all single shot rifles had forearms, and we make them as complete as possible. All forearms must have one or two holes in the factory position to hold them on the mandrel for shaping. Do not ask for complete forearms without holes. We do not make original style forearms for Ballard Pacifics or other key retained forearms. We can make shaped forearms or forearms with barrel channels only at prices listed. Inletting for octagonal barrels in the original sizes is typically within .010”. If you have a non-standard taper we will come as close as possible. If you want a barrel to fit exactly with no inletting, we can make a special pattern using your barreled action that will slip on the barrel. Please realize that the forearms we make are to fit original barrels and actions. If you have a replacement barrel that has a non-standard length or different length of octagonal section for a part octagon barrel, you must let us know. Forearms will have the attaching holes in the original factory position. If you are not sure of the factory location, please ask or be prepared to drill an additional hole or two. We also have 8-32 screws 3/4", 7/8" or 1 1/4" long with fitting brass escutcheons available. These are heat-treated screws with polished heads and are suitable for the best work. Winchester forearms are available with the ebony insert installed. Winchester forearms without this feature are very strange looking. This ebony insert is not available for any other style. Most forearms can be made with an ebony tip as was typical of some high-grade Ballards and Borchardts. To get the best fit for your barrel, measure the barrel size at the frame and at the forearm tip. You may also need to confirm the forearm length and screw hole location if they are not standard. You will probably have to do some fitting on your barrel channel unless you get a glassed pattern made or match one our glassed channel patterns. Forearms are not inlet at the rear for the frame but instead are left slightly long to ensure adequate wood for a good fit. WOOD We can use our wood or customer wood. Our wood is typically original type Eastern thick shell American walnut or fancy tiger stripe maple. Other species are available; if you want another type of wood, please ask. If you are very picky about figure, please send your own wood or ask us to send our selection to you for approval before machining. If customer wood has defects that make it unusable, the machining will still be charged for. All our wood is from the USA and is the best quality that we can find. Figured wood is expensive, but very fancy wood is not required for a handsome stock. Very fancy wood for forearms is not desirable, as it is not stable and will cause problems. Forearm wood is matched as well as possible, and in some cases, especially in oversize blanks, comes from the same piece of wood. The various grades of wood are listed below. The grades are difficult to describe exactly due to natural variation. -6- #1 - Plain straight grained, properly laid out, with no real figure. This wood is typical of original lower grade rifle stocks. #2 - Semi-Fancy, distinguished by some modest figure, at least on the right side. #3 - Standard, figured in the butt area 30-50%, perhaps not equal on both sides. This grade is standard on our rifles and suitable for any high-grade rifle. Best value in fancy wood. #4 - Fancy, very good figure over 50-75% of the stock, typically some crotch grain or exceptional color. Not as highly figured on the cheekpiece side or through wrist. #5 - Extra Fancy, very fine figure on both sides, but not fully covering the butt area. Figure runs farther forward on drawbolt rifles, as tang styles require straighter wood around the grip. There will be color contrast, normally combined with heavy crotch grain or other fancy elements. #6 - Special, the best available and selected for the type of grain that you prefer. This is very difficult to find, and is usually ordered for your particular job. For stocks without a cheekpiece, two-inch thick wood can be used. Cheekpiece styles for Winchesters require a full 2 ½ inches, while Stevens and Ballards can use wood 1/8" thinner. Your wood should be 17" long and wide enough for the stock design. Shorter wood can be used with a lengthening charge added. Forearm wood should be 2" square and 12" long. Larger wood is fine; all wood is band sawed before use anyway. ORDERING INFORMATION Each stock and forearm is made only to order, one at a time. As a result, special features can be added in most cases. Note, however, that it is not possible to make custom stocks using a profiling machine. See below for special order features available. Additional information including pictures, length of pull and drop is available for some stock patterns on our website at www.singleshotrifles.com. Eventually we would like to have this information available online for all stocks. To place an order, specify grade of wood, pattern wanted, barrel shape (round, octagon, part octagon with length of octagon section), barrel dimensions at frame and end of forearm, location of screw hole for forearms, and any accessories or options wanted. When we receive your order we will send you an acknowledgement, which will include all details and pricing confirmation. Delivery time can be as short as one month, but varies on backlog status and workload. All work is guaranteed to be to of good workmanship and to properly fit an original rifle. Stocks will not fit your rifle without some handwork, since wood is left to account for variations. If your action has been altered, as many of them have, you must let me know exactly how it varies from the original or the guarantee is void. If you suspect that there has been an alteration, please send sketches; do not guess - guesses can be expensive. -7- BUTTSTOCK PATTERNS Price is for machining only. The total cost of stocks is the cost of machining (which is on the right side of the pattern listing) plus the cost of the wood (which is listed on Page 17). When we receive the order, you will be sent a stock work order detailing the stock information, including costs. We try to ship all stocks within a month of the order date, but this cannot be guaranteed due to varying workloads of this and other products. BARRELS We can provide barrel blanks in a variety of sizes, including part and full octagon and round contours. Most calibers are available and we can accommodate special orders, though they do take more time. For customers who want to shoot with more than one cartridge, we can provide additional barrels complete with forearm to fit the CPA action. Interchanging the barrels is a simple - 11 - task for the shooter, and the cost is much less than buying two complete rifles. Due to our heavy workload, we will not accept barrel fitting work except for CPA and Stevens rifles. Please refer to the price list for a partial list of the barrels and fitting work that is available. We are currently doing barrel fit work only for CPA and Stevens rifles. PARTS AND ACCESSORIES FOR SINGLE SHOT RIFLES LEVERS We have Pope, ball and spur, loop and plain levers available for Stevens rifles only. Lever castings are available that can be welded onto original upper sections for Ballards and Winchesters. Wood inserts for the ball and spur levers are available fitted but not finished. BUTTPLATES We have buttplate castings normally available as listed below. These are all investment cast and quite smooth and easy to polish. The steel plates can be blued, plated, or color hardened. Some are available already polished and colored. A few patterns are available in white bronze. STYLES Stevens #3 Stevens #4 Winchester: Swiss Remington Schuetzen Large Swiss Schoyen 1-Prong Schoyen 2-prong Helm The Stevens Pope buttplate is illustrated on the cover, and we also have castings of the Winchester 1885 rifle plate, Winchester 86 large rifle plate and the Zischang large plate. - 12 - Reproductions of original shotgun style buttplates are also available. Most are injection molded from hard black rubber, but the Niedner is steel. Styles include: Remington/Sharps Creedmoor (checkered, no logo) Sharps with "SRC" logo Stevens "S" logo, Staghead (English model) and Favorite Winchester M70 (black rubber) Niedner, similar to the M70, but slimmer and high quality checkered steel We have matching screws for all buttplates, with polished and blued heads. GRIP CAPS Winchester logo (small), Sharps, screws. PALM RESTS The CPA palm rest is modeled on the original Stevens-Pope model often seen on Stevens rifles. Stevens palm rests came in many different styles, and this one is copied from the palm rest on a Stevens-Pope Model 49. The knob pivots forward to clear the lever, and is adjustable for height and angle. The attaching hole locations are the same as for the most common Pope styles, and the attaching screws come thru from the inside of the forearm, making a neat and simple installation. The palm rest is completely machined and assembled, ready to install on your rifle. It comes with instructions for installation and wood finishing. The vertical parts are available blued or unfinished. The palm rest base and link are carefully polished and nickel-plated (as were the originals) or case colored. Round knobs are available in the traditional size of 2 ½”, or the more popular 3”. Schoyen knobs are oblong and shaped to fit the hand of right- or left-handed shooters. Knobs are available sanded and with an oil finish at additional cost. If you would like the wood to match an existing stock, please send the forearm or a good photo; to match a new forearm, specify this on your order. We have hundreds of knobs available in many kinds of woods. There is no charge for matching. The entire palm rest in made in the USA; this is not unfinished foreign junk! SIGHT ADAPTERS FOR SCHUETZEN RIFLES Rear sight adapters are made for Redfield type rear micrometer mounts and for the Anschutz rear sight. These are placed on the rear scope mount placed just ahead of the frame of the rifle, and are available to mount on either cup style rear scope bases used by Lyman, Fecker and most Unertl, or on the Posa style used by some Unertl and all Redfield scopes. They are machined from solid steel and are low luster blued. The attaching screw turns on a set screw. - 13 - Redfield Sight Adapter Anschutz Sight Adapter The Redfield type is offset the correct distance to the left to accommodate the “gallows arm” of the sight, and has five mounting holes to allow the sight to be placed in the correct position fore and aft. The Anschutz type accommodates this excellent sight in the center position, allowing it to be slid to the correct position. Please specify if you need the old-style Anschutz adapter (rounded top), or the new style (flat top). The line of sight of all these adapters is full scope height, giving a common face position with your scope. Front sight adapters allow a detachable sight to be mounted in a front dovetail. When used with the rear sight adapters shown above, rear tube sight or long range tang sight, you can achieve a good line of sight with a high comb stock. The front sight adapter is designed to work with Redfield International and Olympic, Lyman 93 MJT, and any other sight of the same measurement. They are case colored to match the CPA scope bases and include a set screw to lock it into place in the dovetail. CPA scope bases are made in low height for either octagon or round barrels. These are milled from solid stock and are polished and color case hardened. They come with matching hardened 6-48 screws, and are sold in sets of two with .860 and .562 hole spacing. The bases are cup style on one side and Posa on the other, allowing them to fit most external adjustment scopes. We also have MVA scope bases and Weaver 63B bases, which allow you to mount a modern internal adjustment scope. The Weaver bases are aluminum with a black matte finish and are milled to provide clearance to extend over the receiver. - 14 - PRICE LIST Rifles and Actions Price All rifles include: case colored frame, double set triggers, custom length of pull, pistol grip, right- or left-hand cheekpiece stock with hand-rubbed oil finish.
