TI A novel multiplex PCR method for detecting virulent strains of Vibrio alginolyticus
SO AQUACULTURE RESEARCH
AB The bacterial strains obtained from various origins were tested with the novel primers
targeting the collagenase gene, ompK gene and toxR gene to establish a multiplex polymerase
chain reaction (PCR) method. These primers successfully recognized all virulent strains of
Vibrio alginolyticus, but the avirulent strains were not recognized by the multiplex PCR
because of lack of the collagenase and toxR genes. In a 50 mu L multiplex PCR mixture, the
lowest detection limit is 8.8 x 102 cells of virulent strains of V. alginolyticus. The multiplex
PCR method was successfully developed to identify virulent strains of V. alginolyticus, and
provides a rapid, sensitive, specific and reliable technology for diagnosing virulent strains of V.
alginolyticus. Therefore, the novel multiplex PCR in the present paper can be useful for any
laboratory working with vibriosis detection of aquatic animals.

TI Apparent digestibility of selected feed ingredients for white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei,

AB Apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter (DM), crude protein, crude lipid, gross energy,
phosphorus and amino acids in Peruvian fish meal (FM), fermented soybean meal, extruded
soybean meal, soybean meal, peanut meal, wheat gluten meal, corn gluten meal, shrimp
byproduct meal, meat and bone meal (MBM), poultry meat meal and plasma protein meal
(PPM) were determined for white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). A reference diet (RF) and
test diets (consisting of 70% RF diet and 30% of the feedstuff) were used with 0.5% chromic
oxide as an external indicator. A total of 1440 shrimp (initial mean body weight 1.05 +/- 0.01 g)
were randomly stocked into thirty-six 500-L fibreglass tanks with 40 shrimp per tank and
three tanks per diet. Faeces were collected from triplicate groups of shrimp by a faecal
collection vessel attached to the shrimp-rearing tank. The shrimp were fed to apparent satiation
four times a day and the feeding experiment lasted for 6 weeks. Statistics indicate that
apparent DM digestibilities for white shrimp (L. vannamei) were the highest for FM, ranged
52.83-71.23% for other animal products and 69.98-77.10% for plant products. The protein and
lipid from plant and animal sources were well digested by white shrimp. Apparent protein and
lipid digestibility were in the range 87.89-93.18% and 91.57-95.28%, respectively, in plant
products, and 75.00-92.34% and 83.72-92.79%, respectively, for animal products. The white
shrimp demonstrated a high capacity to utilize phosphorus in the ingredients. The apparent
phosphorus digestibility ranges of animal feedstuffs and plant feedstuffs were 58.90-71.61%
and 75.77-82.30% respectively. Amino acid availability reflected protein digestibility, except
that in MBM, for which the availability of some amino acid was lower, possibly due to
protein damage during processing. Digestibility information could promote the use of
ingredient substitution in least-cost formulated diets for white shrimp.

AB Direct electrochemistry of a glucose oxidase (GOD)-graphene-chitosan nanocomposite was
studied. The immobilized enzyme retains its bioactivity, exhibits a surface confined, reversible
two-proton and two-electron transfer reaction, and has good stability, activity and a fast
heterogeneous electron transfer rate with the rate constant (k(s)) of 2.83 s(-1). A much higher
enzyme loading (1.12 x 10(-9) mol/cm(2)) is obtained as compared to the bare glass carbon
surface. This GOD-graphene-chitosan nanocomposite film can be used for sensitive
detection of glucose. The biosensor exhibits a wider linearity range from 0.08 mM to 12 mM
glucose with a detection limit of 0.02 mM and much higher sensitivity (37.93 mu A mM(-1)
cm(-2)) as compared with other nanostructured supports. The excellent performance of the
biosensor is attributed to large surface-to-volume ratio and high conductivity of graphene, and
good biocompatibility of chitosan, which enhances the enzyme absorption and promotes direct
electron transfer between redox enzymes and the surface of electrodes. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.

AB Marine fishes are rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), especially eicosapentaenoic
acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are extremely important for human health.
The objective of our work was to determine the content and composition of lipids and fatty
acids in the different tissues of cobia from China and to evaluate their nutritional value. The
results showed that cobia from China was rich in lipids; the neutral lipid content was above
82%; the content of cholesterol and phospholipid was low. Eighteen fatty acids were
identified. Myristic (C14:0), palmitic (C16:0), and stearic acids (C18:0) were the main
saturated acids; palmitoleic (C16:1n-7) and oleic acid (C18:1n-9) were the main
monounsaturated fatty acids. EPA and DHA were the main PUFA; n-3 and n-6 PUFA were
present as 12-18% and 2.6-3.2% of the total fatty acids, respectively. The n-6/n-3 ratio was in
the range from 0.18 to 0.22, which was far lower than that (5:1) recommended by WHO/FAO.
Therefore, cobia lipids from China have a high nutritional value.

dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional network. The
eight-coordinate Sr atom exists in a distorted square-antiprismatic geometry. The crystal

AB In order to better understand the role of herbivorous snails in freshwater ecosystems, we
conducted experiments investigating food preference of the snail Radix swinhoei on leaves of
the submerged plant Vallisneria spiralis with and without periphyton coverage. The effects
of snail grazing on the growth of V. spiralis were assessed in a no-snail control and at three
snail densities (80, 160, 240 individuals m(-2)). Results showed that the snails chose
preferentially leaves covered by periphyton. Grazing activity at low snail density (80
individuals m(-2)) was found to stimulate V. spiralis growth, but at higher snail density (240
individuals m(-2)), plant growth was apparently suppressed. An increase observed in nutrient
concentrations in water column with increasing snail density may be attributed to nutrient
release by snails. This study suggests that the nature of the relationship between herbivorous
snails and macrophytes in freshwater ecosystems depends on the abundance of the snails. At
low snail density, the relationship may be a mutualistic one, but at high density snail
herbivory may impact negatively on macrophyte biomass in lakes. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All

Revealed by Mitochondrial COI Sequences

AB Genetic diversity and population structure of Sipunculus nudus were evaluated using a 652
base pair fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene. The populations were
collected from Beihai, Sanya, and Xiamen. A total of 71 polymorphic sites defined 16 distinct
haplotypes. The mean haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity of the three populations
were 0.9354 +/- A 0.0168 and 0.0035 +/- A 0.0018, respectively. Analysis at the
intrapopulation level showed that the Beihai population had the greatest haplotype and
nucleotide diversity, followed by the Xiamen and Sanya populations. Analysis of molecular
variance showed significant genetic differentiation among the three populations (Fst = 0.0796,
P < 0.05). The present results revealed that S. nudus populations had a high level of genetic
diversity and distinct population structures.

TI Population genetic structure and historical demography of grey mullet, Mugil cephalus, along
the coast of China, inferred by analysis of the mitochondrial control region
SO BIOCHEMICAL SYSTEMATICS AND ECOLOGY
AB Population genetic structure and historical demography of grey mullet, Mugil cephalus, along
the coast of China were examined with a 389-bp segment of mtDNA control region. In total,
117 samples were collected from seven locations and 77 haplotypes were obtained. No
haplotype was concurrently presented in all the samples, and samples in Southern and
Northern regions had distinctly different haplotypes. Sorting of the data cladistically into
phylogenetic trees indicated that these haplotypes can be divided into two main clades.
Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated significant genetic differentiation among
subpopulations in different regions (phi(CT) = 0.9505, p < 0.01). The average pairwise
differences and phi(ST) values (0.8943-0.9464) between regional populations were significant.
The net Tumura and Nei genetic distance (0.5577 +/- 0.1421) between the two groups was
large. The deep and unique divergence between the two groups suggested that each group is
likely to represent a distinct species. In contrast to the great genetic divergence on a broad
scale, small but significant population subdivisions at a less spatial scale were also detected
both in Southern and Northern regions, which support the conclusion that M. cephalus has
limited dispersal potential. High haplotype diversity (h = 0.8716 +/-0.1462) and low
nucleotide diversity (pi = 0.0046 +/- 0.0030) were found among the three Northern samples.
Among the four Southern samples, however, extraordinarily high levels of both haplotype
diversity (h =0.9886 +/- 0.0057) and nucleotide diversity (pi = 0.0425 +/- 0.0212) were
detected. The different polymorphisms suggest an apparent distinguishing demographic
history between regionally Southern and Northern populations, though mismatch distribution
analyses and neutrality tests implied a late Pleistocene population expansion of both

TI Effect of dietary carbohydrate level on growth performance of juvenile spotted Babylon
(Babylonia areolata Link 1807)

AB A growth trial was conducted to determine the effects of dietary carbohydrate level on growth
performance, feed utilization and metabolism of juvenile spotted babylon. Six isonitrogenous
and isoenergetic experimental diets (48% crude protein and 15MJ kg(-1) diet) using wheat
starch as the carbohydrate source, were formulated to contain six carbohydrate levels.
Triplicate groups of 45 animals (initial average weight, 168.39 +/- 0.69 mg) were stocked in
120-1 tanks and fed to apparent satiation twice daily for 10 weeks. Growth performance and
feed utilization were significantly affected by dietary carbohydrate level. Maximum weight
gain and specific growth rate occurred at 20% dietary starch inclusion, survival and soft body
to shell ratios were not significantly different among diets. There were significant differences
in protein, lipid, moisture and glycogen content in soft body. Glycogen content in soft body
was positively correlated with dietary starch level. The activities of glucose-6-phosphate
dehydrogenase and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase were significantly affected by dietary starch
level, with both peaking in the 20% treatment; however, there were no significant differences
in 6-phosphofructokinase activity in any treatment. Quadratic regression analysis of weight
gain against dietary starch level indicated that the optimal dietary carbohydrate level for
maximum weight gain of juvenile spotted babylon is 27.1% of dry diet. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.

TI A new approach to numerical differentiation

AB In this paper we consider the numerical differentiation of functions specified by noisy data. A
new approach, which is based on an integral equation of the first kind with a suitable compact
operator, is presented and discussed. Since the singular system of the compact operator can be
obtained easily, TSVD is chosen as the needed regularization technique and we show that the
method calls for a discrete sine transform, so the method can be implemented easily and
fast. Numerical examples are also given to show the efficiency of the method. (C) 2009

AB A robust three-dimensional discrete particle model (3D DPM) for unstructured meshes is
presented to model the gas-solid flows in fluidized beds. The finite volume method is used to
discretize the governing equations of the gas phase. Inter-particle interactions are taken into
account through the hard-sphere approach. The numerical models for the solid phase were
implemented as a separate module in FLUENT by overcoming some limitations of the
user-defined function approach. A multifaceted numerical strategy was developed to enhance
the computational efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate the ability of the model to
capture many important characteristics such as bubbling, spouting, particle clustering and
core-annulus flow structures in gas-solid systems at specified operating conditions. Crown

TI Isolation and characterisation of acid-solubilised collagen from the skin of Nile tilapia
(Oreochromis niloticus)

AB Acid-solubilised collagen (ASC) was extracted from the skin of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis
niloticus) and characterisation was studied. The results indicated that the yield of ASC was
39.4% on the basis of dry weight. This ASC was rich in glycine (35.6%). The amount of
imino acids, proline and hydroxyproline, in ASC was 210 residues per 1000 residues. The
ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectrum of ASC showed that the distinct absorption was at 220
run. ASC showed transition curve at maximum temperature of 32.0 degrees C in 0.05 M acetic
acid, about 12 degrees C lower than that of calf skin collagen. Maximum solubility (0.75
mg/ml) in 0.5 M acetic acid was observed at pH 3. Solubility reached the minimum at pH 7. A
sharp decrease in Solubility was observed in 2% (w/v)
NaCl or above. Biochemical Studies indicated that ASC was composed of

TI Realized Heritability and Genetic Gain Estimates of Larval Shell Length in the Chinese Pearl
Oyster Pinctada martensii at Three Different Salinities

AB The second-generation selected (SS) and control (SC) lines of the Chinese pearl oyster
Pinctada martensii were established by selecting the 10% of breeders with the largest and
mean sizes, respectively, from the first-generation selected group. Larval offspring of the SS
and SC lines were reared at 30, 24, and 18 parts per thousand. Heritability and genetic gains of
larval shell length were estimated on the basis of data measured at days 8, 14, and 21. At days
8 and 14, there were no significant differences in mean shell length between the SS and SC
lines at 30, 24, and 18 parts per thousand (P > 0.05). On day 2 1, however, the SS line
displayed significantly larger mean shell length than the SC line at 30 parts per thousand and
24 parts per thousand (P < 0.05), Heritability estimates and genetic gains for larval shell length
ranged front 0.22 to 0.64 and from 3.69% to 14.93%, respectively. The results from this study
indicate that considerable genetic variability exists in the base population and that mass
selection for the second generation is still effective.

AB In order to explore the responses of the bacterioplankton community to different types of
aquaculture environments, three mariculture ponds comprised of groupers (Epinephelus
diacanthus, ED), prawns (Penaeus vannamei, PV), and abalone (Haliotis diversicolor
supertexta, HDS) in southeast, coastal China were investigated. The free-living bacterial
diversity was analyzed through the construction of 16S rDNA clone library. A total of 203 16S
rDNA sequences from three clone libraries were classified into 118 operational taxonomic
units (OTUs), of which 51, 31, and 42 OTUs were distributed in the ED, PV, and HDS pond,
respectively, with Bacteroidetes (30.6%), Actinobacteria (55.2%), and Cyanobacteria (32.8%)
as the dominant division in the respective ponds. Meanwhile, each pond occupied some unique
OTUs that were affiliated with uncommon (sub-) phyla, such as candidate OP11 division,
Acidobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, Planctomycetes, and Verrucomicrobia. Bacterial
diversity in the ED pond was the richest, followed by the HDS and the PV pond. OTUs of
61.9% and 94.9% have less than 90% and 97% similarity to their nearest neighbors in public
databases, respectively. All OTUs were grouped into 67 clusters, covering 11 (sub-) phyla. The
OTUs only from single pond distributed in 53 clusters (79.1%), the OTUs shared by two
ponds were affiliated with 14 clusters (20.9%), and none of clusters was formed by the OTUs
which commonly originated from the three pond libraries, suggesting that the composition of
bacterial populations in these ponds were significantly different. These results indicate that
the aquatic environment created by different mariculture animals may foster very special and
complex bacterial communities.

TI A chaotic image cryptosystem based on Toeplitz and Hankel matrices

AB Because of properties in chaos system such as the sensitive dependence on initial conditions,
system parameters, pseudorandom property and ergodicity, chaotic image encryption
algorithm can suggest a new and efficient way of encryption scheme, which has been studied
more and more in recent years. A novel chaotic image encryption algorithm based on
Toeplitz matrix and Hankel matrix is proposed in this paper. We shuffle totally the positions of
image pixels to confuse the relationship between the plain image and cipher image combined
with Toeplitz matrix, Hankel matrix and logistic chaotic system. Another hyper-chaos system
of Chen's chaotic system is taken to change the grey values of image pixels to enhance the
security further. Experimental results in Sections 3 and 4 demonstrate that the key space is
large enough and the key is sensitive to initial conditions to resist the brute force attack in the
proposed algorithm. Additionally, the distribution of grey values in encrypted image has a
random-like behaviour to resist statistical analysis.

AB P>Peptic hydrolysate with angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity was
prepared from Acetes chinensis. The 3 kDa ultrafiltration filtrates (UF-IV) of the desalted
hydrolysate exerted a potent ACE inhibitory activity with IC50 being 0.67 mg mL-1. The
fractions with molecular weight located between 611 and 240 Da achieved a total percentage
of 63.6% in the UF-IV, with a mean peptide length of about 5.6-2.1. Gastrointestinal
digestions were simulated on the hydrolysate and UF-IV and addressed their effect on the ACE
inhibitory activity. The ACE inhibitory activity of the UF-IV could survive or be
maintained in active form by simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Furthermore, the UF-IV
exerted potent antihypertensive effect after oral administrations were given to spontaneously
hypertensive rats (SHR) at a dose of 900 mg kg-1 body weight. In conclusion, the UF-IV
could serve as useful antihypertensive peptides in the prevention and treatment of
hypertension and other associated disorders.

AB Nanosized particles of (La(0.57)Dy(0.1))Sr(0.33)MnO(3) perovskite-type oxides were
successfully synthesized at relatively low calcinated temperature of 800 degrees C for 10 h
using amorphous molecular alloy as precursor. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron
diffraction (ED) revealed that the resulting product is of pure single-phase rhombohedral
structure. From the measurements and calculation of isothermal magnetization at different
temperatures, we discovered that the maximum magnetic entropy change at T(C) (358 K)
increases near linearly with magnetic field increasing and shows no sign of saturation even
under 5 T; moreover, a comparatively large magnetic entropy change with broader peak
temperature range around the Curie temperature is also observed, and this good performance
may be related to the large surface and interface of nanoparticles.

TI Population genetic structure of striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, along the coast of China,
inferred by AFLP fingerprinting
SO BIOCHEMICAL SYSTEMATICS AND ECOLOGY
AB The striped mullet Mugil cephalus, is an economically important species for both aqua-culture
and commercial fisheries in China. In this study, the amplified fragment length polymorphism
(AFLP) technique was employed to analyze population genetic diversity and genetic distance
between different populations with the aim of elucidating the population structure and gene
flow of M. cephalus along the coast of China. A total of 230 fragments with 150-500 bp were
identified from 118 individuals by five AFLP primer combinations. The polymorphic loci
within populations varied from 46.52% to 64.78%, with an average of 53.91%, and the
average heterozygosity from 0.1829 to 0.2282, with an average of 0.2074. The UPGMA
phenograms of 118 individuals were constructed based on Dice similarity coefficients and
four clusters were recognized. AMOVA analysis revealed that 60.7% of genetic variations
were within populations and 39.3% between populations. The estimated genetic distance
(phi(ST)) value over all polymorphic loci across the six populations was 0.393 (p < 0.0010),
indicating a strong population structuring. The pairwise phi(ST) value ranged from 0.1112 to
0.5358, with an average of 0.3693. The population pairwise gene flows (average N(m) = 0.73)
are low. In addition, the result of the Mantel test showed that there was a significant
correlation between geographic and genetic distances (r = 0.5434, p = 0.0050). It was
speculated that there exist at least four distinct geographic populational subdivisions of M.
cephalus along the Chinese coast. This research has provided new molecular data which will
aid our understanding of the genetic structure of this species. Crown Copyright (C) 2009

AB In this paper, magnetic property and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in nanoparticles perovskite
manganites of the type (La(0.67-x)Gd(x))Sr(0.33)MnO(3) (x = 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) synthesized
by using an amorphous molecular alloy as precursor have been reported. From the magnetic
measurements as function of temperature and magnetic applied field, we have discovered that
the Curie temperature (TC) of the prepared samples is found to be strongly dependent on Gd
content. The Curie temperature of samples is 358.4, 343.2, and 285.9 K for x = 0.1, 0.15, and
0.2, respectively. A large magnetocaloric effect close to T(C) has been observed with a
maximum of magnetoentropy change in all the samples, |Delta S(M)|(max) of 1.96 and 4.90
J/kg K at 2 and 5T, respectively, for a substitution rate of 0.15. In addition, the maximum
magnetic entropy change observed for samples with different concentration of Gd, exhibits a
linear dependence with the applied high magnetic field. These results suggest that (La(0.67-x)
Gd(x))Sr(0.33)MnO(3) (x = 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) compounds could be a suitable candidate as
working substance in magnetic refrigeration near room temperature. (C) 2009 Published by

AB This paper presents an experimental study on the adhesive wear of a milling insert with
complex groove when milling 3Cr-1Mo-1/4V and 0Cr18Ni9 steels. Experimental
measurements of milling temperature and milling force were performed. Then the adhesive
behaviors and mechanisms between the steels and uncoated carbide were analyzed and
discussed. It is found that the high temperature gradient, thermal stress, alternate
compressive stress, and tensile stress in cut-in and cut-out, provide a situation for adhesion.
Some suggestions for avoiding adhesive wear and the mechanism of adhesive wear of the
insert are presented.

TI The impact of esterification on the properties of starch/natural rubber composite
SO COMPOSITES SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
AB The starch was modified by esterification, and the starch/natural rubber composite was
prepared by blending the modified starch with natural rubber latex. The morphology, thermal
stability and mechanical properties of the composite were investigated. The results show that
the crystal structure of starch in the composite disappears after modification with esterification,
and the starch particles with an average size around 200 ran homogenously disperse
throughout the natural rubber (NR) matrix. The thermal stability of composite is improved
significantly after the modification with starch. The mechanical properties of composite are
enhanced with the increase of starch loading. The composite possesses the best properties at
the starch xanthate content of 20 parts per hundred rubber (phr). The enhanced thermal
stability and mechanical properties of modified starch/NR composite are mainly due to the

TI Numerical calculation of the response of the south China sea to typhoon imbudo
SO ACTA PHYSICA SINICA
AB The response of the South China Sea (SCS) to Typhoon Imbudo was examined using POM
model. The results indicated that SST decreased by 2-6 degrees C with a rightward-biased
response as Typhoon Imbudo passed across the SCS. Due to a strong mixing process, the
mixed layer (ML) depth deepened as much as 10-60 m and ML heat budget lost 824.78
W/m(2), which was OF dominated by the vertical mixing. By the response of upper ML heat
transport, the temperature below the ML increased and oscillated near the inertial period.
Furthermore, strong inertial currents were generated by the storm with the max currents up to
1.4 m/s in the upper ML.

TI Mass Spectrometric Study on Active Sites of Myoglobin Hydrolyzed by Cu(II) Compounds

AB Hydrolyzation of myoglobin was studied by means of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis
using Cu(II) compounds as artificial metallopeptidase. High performance liquid
chromatography-electrospray mass spectrometric method was used to replace the traditional
N-terminal amino acid sequence combined with matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization
time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and ESIMS to measure the molecular
masses of fragments obtained from the hydrolyzation and determine the hydrolytic active sites.
Four fragments with molecular mass of 10093.0, 10388.0, 6876.0 and 6581.0 were obtained,
corresponding to fragment of Glyl-91, Glyl-Ala94, Ser92-Gly153 and Thr95-Gly153
respectively. The results indicated that Cu(II) can degrade myoglobin through anchoring to the
side chain of His93 which is detached from iron, and breaks the second peptide bonds of both
upstream and downstream: Gln91-Ser92 and Ala94-Thr95. The active site of Gln91-Ser92
has been observed in other studies of protein hydrolysis by Cu(II) compounds, however, the
site of Ala94-Thr95 is a new active site located at the N-terminal of Thr in His93-Ala94-Thr95
sequence. This site has not been reported in the investigations of protein hydrolyzation with
Cu(II) compounds.

TI Optimising the free radical scavenging activity of shrimp protein hydrolysate produced with

AB P>Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimise the hydrolysis parameters of
Acetes chinensis by Alcalase 2.4L in order to obtain a hydrolysate with potent radical
scavenging activity. The parameters were temperature, pH and enzyme concentration/substrate
concentration (E/S) ratio with degree of hydrolysis (DH) being the response. The results
showed that the optimum condition was: temperature at 57 degrees C, pH at 8.0, E/S ratio at
2.6AU 100 g(-1) shrimp, hydrolysis time 3 h. The DH was 26.32%, the hydroxyl radical
scavenging activity was up to 88.12% and the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical
scavenging activity was 35.61%. The gel column filtration chromatography by a Sephadex
G-25 column yielded five fractions. The molecular weight of the most potent free radical
scavenging activity fraction ranged from 915 to 207 Da, its IC(50) for hydroxyl radical was
0.03 mg mL(-1), and IC(50) for DPPH radical was 8.86 mg mL(-1).

TI Enhanced flavonoid production in hairy root cultures of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch by
combining the over-expression of chalcone isomerase gene with the elicitation treatment
SO PLANT CELL REPORTS
AB Economically important compounds, such as licorice flavonoids, are present in insufficient
amounts in the hairy roots. To overcome this problem, we took the transgenic approach
combined with the elicitation technique to increase the flavonoid production. The Glycyrrhiza
uralensis Fisch cDNA encoding chalcone isomerase gene (chi) was over-expressed in hairy
roots of G. uralensis Fisch mediated by the disarmed Agrobacterium rhizogenes A4. Stable
genetic transformation was confirmed by Southern blot analysis. The transgenic and wild
cultures were subsequently elicited with PEG8000 (2%) alone, yeast extract (YE) (0.1%) alone,
or both of them, and then the total flavonoids were extracted and measured. The results
showed that over a culture period of 3 weeks, the wild-type hairy roots, the untreated
transgenic hairy roots, and the double-treated transgenic hairy roots accumulated 0.842,
1.394, and 2.838 (g/100 g DW) of total flavonoids, respectively. Moreover, the enhanced
accumulation of flavonoids were correlated with the elevated level of chi transcripts and CHI
activity, confirming the key role of chi in the flavonoids synthesis. This research demonstrated
that the combination of the metabolic engineering and PEG8000-YE elicitation treatment was
an effective strategy to increase the flavonoids production in hairy roots of G. uralensis Fisch.

waters of the South China Sea

AB We describe a new species of gerreid fish, Gerres septemfasciatus, based on four specimens
collected from the northern South China Sea. G septemfasciatus most closely resembles G
limbatus in general appearance. However, G. septemfasciatus is distinguished from the latter
and other congeners by having 3 to 3.5 scales between the base of. the fifth dorsal spine and
lateral line. This species has a distinctive color pattern, including 7-8 regular, vertical,
blue-grayish bands on its side. The distribution of this species is currently known to include
the Chinese coastal waters of the South China Sea, but may be also include the coastal waters
of southeastern Asia.

AB Four 2,4-dioxohexahydro-1,3,5-triazine O-acetylglycosyl glucosides were synthesized
through glucoside formation reactions at room temperature using 4-dimethylaminopyridine as
a catalyst and triethylamine as a deacidification reagent. Their structure was confirmed by IR,
(1)H NMR spectra, MS, and elemental analysis. The synthesized compounds are all of
beta-configuration. The results show that DMAP is an effective catalyst; the yields can reach
83.7%. The above glucosides showed an improved antiviral activity against tobacco mosaic
virus.

AB Lysozymes are key proteins to invertebrates in the innate immune responses against bacterial
infections. A lysozyme gene isolated from tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, was cloned,
sequenced and characterized. The cDNA consists of a signal peptide of 18 amino acids and a
mature peptide of 140 amino acids. The lysozyme is presumed to be a chicken-type lysozyme
for it possesses two catalytic sites and eight cysteine residues which are highly conserved
across species of chicken-type lysozymes. The lysozyme cDNAs of Penaeus semisulcatus,
Litopenaeus vannamei, Macrobrachium nipponense and Macrobrachium rosenbergii were also
cloned. High similarities existed among shrimp and prawn lysozymes but phylogenetic
relationship of shrimps and prawns based on lysozyme molecules did not quite consistent with
traditional taxonomic classification. High mRNA expression was detected in
hepatopancreas, haemocytes and gill of tiger shrimp. Recombinant lysozyme exhibited potent
lytic activities against fish pathogens providing evidence of the involvement of lysozyme in
shrimp immunity.

TI Synthesis of Chitosan-Schiff Base Cu(II) Complexes and its Application as Catalyst in
Decomposition of H(2)O(2)

AB The Schiff bases of chitosan were synthesized by using chitosan (CS) and salicylaldehyde
under microwave irradiation. The chitosan-Schiff base Cu (II) complexes were obtained by
reaction of the biopolymeric Schiff base with copper (II) acetate. The products were
characterized by UV, FTIR, TG/DTA and elemental analysis. Furthermore, the catalytic
capability of the chitosan-Schiff base Cu (II) complexes for decomposition of H(2)O(2)
was investigated. The results indicated that it took only two minutes in 360W microwave
irradiation to obtain the Schiff bases with a degree of substitution of 97%, and the complexes
had high catalytic activity for the decomposition of H(2)O(2). The decomposition rate of
H(2)O(2) was 99.8% under the conditions of 25 degrees C, atmospheric pressure, pH=7.0
and reaction time of 12 h. After three runs of catalytic reactions, the complexes still retained
high catalytic activity.

AB Spontaneous coagulation NR, acid coagulation NR and constant viscidity NR were prepared
and their properties were studied. The results show that acid coagulation NR can possess best
anti-aging performance, while spontaneous coagulation NR may have good mechanical
properties and high cure rate. As to the constant viscidity NR, its mechanical properties and
cure rate decreases compare to the NR without the addition of hydroxylamine hydrochloride.
For all samples, the cure process can be divided into two stages: the stage I following
first-order kinetics and the stage II following n not equal 1 order. Besides, with the prolonging
of maturation process, the mechanical properties, the cure rate and the maximum torque of
spontaneous coagulation NR increase gradually, while the nitrogen content and the PRI
decline.

TI The characteristics of gelatin extracted from sturgeon (Acipenser baeri) skin using various

AB The physicochemical characteristics of gelatin obtained by different pretreatments of sturgeon
(Acipenser baeri) skin with alkaline and/or acidic solutions have been studied. Visual
appearance, pH, gel strength, viscosity and amino acid profile of the gelatins were evaluated,
Pretreatment with alkaline solutions of Ca(OH)(2) and/or acetic acid (HAC) provided gelatin
with a favourable colour. Pretreatment with alkali removed noncollagenous proteins
effectively, whilst acid induced some loss of collagenous proteins. Gel strength and viscosity
of gelatin pretreated with HAC or alkali followed by HAC were as high as gelatin extracted in
the presence of protease inhibitors. Amino acid composition had no significant effect on the
gelatin characteristics. The total acid concentration for the highest gel strength was inversely
proportional to ionisation strength, and the preferred pH for extracting gelatin with the
optimum gel strength was approximately 5.0. The results showed that any available protons,
regardless of the type or concentration of the acid, inhibit protease activity, which

TI Effects of dietary copper on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and fiber characteristics
in cashmere goats during the cashmere slow-growing period
SO SMALL RUMINANT RESEARCH
AB Thirty-six 2.5-year-old wether Inner Mongolian White Cashmere Goats (IMWG)
(BW=42.7+/-3.44kg) were used to determine the effects of dietary copper (Cu) concentration
on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and fiber characteristics during the cashmere
slow-growing period. Wethers were stratified by weight and randomly assigned to four dietary
treatments, which included a control diet containing 5.60 mg Cu/kg DM, the control diet
supplied. respectively, with 10, 20 and 30 mg Cu/kg DM (total dietary Cu level of 5.60, 15.6,
25.6 and 35.6 mg/kg DM). The experiment lasted 50 days including a 10-day preliminary trial
and 10-day metabolism trial. Average daily feed intake (ADFI) did not differ among treatment
groups (P>0.05), except that the supplement providing 30mg Cu/kg DM decreased average
daily gain and gain efficiency (P<0.05). Copper supplementation had no influence on
digestibility of DM, CP and ADF (P>0.05), however, NDF digestibility of the treatment group
supplemented with 30 mg Cu/kg DM was lower compared with that of other groups (P<0.05).
Length and growth rate of cashmere fiber were higher in the treatment group supplemented
with 20 mg Cu/kg DM compared with other groups (P<0.05), but cashmere diameter was not
affected by Cu supplementation (P>0.05). In conclusion, supplementation of Cu at the levels
of 10, 20 and 30 mg/kg DM to the basal diet containing 5.60 mg Cu/kg DM had no influence
on ADFI or nutrient digestibility of DM, CP and ADF in cashmere goats, while 30mg Cu/kg
DM supplementation had a negative effect on growth performance and NDF digestibility.
However, 20 mg Cu/kg DM supplementation of the basal diet enhanced cashmere growth.
Hence, the appropriate supplemental level during the cashmere slow-growing period is
deemed to be 20mg Cu/kg DM (total dietary Cu level of 25.6 mg/kg DM). (C) 2009 Elsevier

AB A copper(I) thiocyanate coordination polymer [Cu(mu-1,1,1,3-SCN)](n) 1 has been
synthesized by low-temperature solid-state reaction. Single crystal X-ray analyses revealed
that compound 1 possesses a three-dimensional (3-D) framework structure. The polymer 1 was
characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra and UV-visible spectra. The third-order
non-linear optical (NLO) properties were also investigated and they exhibit good non-linear
absorption and self-defocusing performance with modulus of the hyperpolarizability (gamma)
4.56-10(-29) esu for 1 in a 2.31 x 10(-4) mol.dm(-3) DMF solution.

The results reveal the advantages of the method for Helmholtz equation.

AB The primary aim of this study was to obtain high Fischer ratio oligopeptides from the pearl
oyster Pinctada martensii meat via proteolysis. Pinctada martensii meat protein was
hydrolysed using seven proteases, with pancreatin showing the most protein recovered
(90.30%) and the highest degree of hydrolysis (30.22%). In addition, pancreatin treatment
liberated aromatic amino acids (AAA) and preserved branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) in
the peptide chain more efficiently than other proteases. In our enzymatic hydrolysis system,
the AAA are adsorbed by activated carbon much easier in the form of proteins and peptides
compared with the free state. The fraction purified from the pancreatin hydrolysate after
adsorption onto activated carbon gave a yield of 38.42% based on nitrogen content. It was
composed primarily of low molecular weight peptides and had a Fischer ratio of 24.58, with
phenylalanine (Phe) and tyrosine (Tyr) content below 1.2%. This oligopeptide mixture can be
used for the assistance treatment of patients with hepatic encephalopathy, phenylketonuria and
tyrosinemia according to different dietetic requirement.

TI Water transports through the four main straits around the South China Sea

AB A quasi-global high-resolution HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) is used to
investigate seasonal variations of water transports through the four main straits in the South
China Sea. The results show that the annual transports through the four straits Luzon Strait,
Taiwan Strait, Sunda Shelf and Mindoro Strait are -4.5, 2.3, 0.5 and 1.7 Sv (1 Sv=10(6)
m(3)s(-1)), respectively. The Mindoro Strait has an important outflow that accounts for over
one third of the total inflow through the Luzon Strait. Furthermore, it indicates that there are
strong seasonal variations of water transport in the four straits. The water transport through the
Luzon Strait (Taiwan Strait, Sunda Shelf, Mindoro Strait) has a maximum value of -7.6 Sv in
December (3.1 Sv in July, 2.1S v in January, 4.5Sv in November), a minimum value of -2.1 Sv
in June (1.5 Sv in October, -1.0 Sv in June, -0.2 Sv in May), respectively.

TI Using otolith weight to predict the age of Pennahia macrocephalus in the mouth of the Beibu
Gulf

AB The relation between otolith weight (OW) and the age of marine fish is studied. A total of 222
individuals of bighead white croaker, Pennahia macrocephalus were sampled seasonally in the
mouth of the Beibu Gulf, the South China Sea, in 2007. Since there are no significant
differences in sagittal OW between otolith in pairs (Pa parts per thousand yen0.05), the
undamaged left sagittal otolith is used for age determination. The highest correlations among
standard length, OW and fish ages are confirmed by linear, exponential and multinomial
regression. Results show that sagittal OW overlaps only occasionally among age groups, and
to individuals with similar standard length, the older and slower-growing fish has a heavier
otolith because of the continued otolith material deposition. There are differences in sagittal
OW among different age groups and significant positive linear relationship with age (P < 0.05).
The age readings can be verified by plotting the sagittal OW versus the standard length for age
groups, and the individuals with similar standard length but in different ages can be
separated by sagittal OW frequency analysis. Mostly, the predicted ages using the regression
between sagittal OW and ages are closed to the observed ages by counting annulus on scale. It
indicates that the sagittal OW analysis is a useful technique for validating the accuracy of age
determination by annuli counts, especially for individuals of similar size. Furthermore, the
technique is applied for Pennahia macrocephalus with discussion in this paper.

TI Variations and controls of nitrogen stable isotopes in particulate organic matter of lakes
SO OECOLOGIA
AB Nitrogen stable isotope (delta(15)N) data of particulate organic matter (POM) from the
literature were analyzed to provide an understanding of the variations and controls of
delta(15)N(POM) in lakes at the global scale. The delta(15)N(POM) variability characterized
by seasonal mean, minimum, maximum, and amplitude (defined as delta(15)N(POM)
maximum - delta(15)N(POM) minimum) from 36 lakes with seasonal data did not change
systematically with latitude, but was significantly lower in small lakes than in large lakes. The
seasonal mean delta(15)N(POM) increased from oligotrophic lakes to eutrophic lakes despite
large variations that are attributed to the occurrences of nitrogen fixation across the trophic
gradient and the differences in delta(15)N of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in individual
lakes. Seasonal mean delta(15)N(POM) was significantly correlated with DIN concentration
and delta(15)N(DIN) in two subsets of lakes. Seasonal minimum delta(15)N(POM) in
individual lakes is influenced by nitrogen fixation and delta(15)N(DIN) while seasonal
maximum delta(15)N(POM) is influenced by lake trophic state and delta(15)N(DIN). As a
result of the dominance of non-living POM in the unproductive surface waters, seasonal
delta(15)N(POM) amplitude was small (mean = 4.2aEuro degrees) in oligotrophic lakes of all
latitudes. On the other hand, seasonal delta(15)N(POM) amplitude in eutrophic lakes was large
(mean = 10.3aEuro degrees), and increased from low to high latitudes, suggesting that the
seasonal variability of delta(15)N in the phytoplankton-dominated POM pool was elevated by
the greater spans of
solar radiation and thermal regimes at high latitudes. The
delta(15)N(POM) from 42 lakes with no seasonal data revealed no consistent patterns along
latitude, lake area, and trophic gradients, and a greater than 2aEuro degrees depletion
compared to the lakes with seasonal data. Along with the large seasonal variability of
delta(15)N(POM) within lakes, these results provide insightful information on sampling
design for the studies of food web baseline in lakes.

AB In the Tarim Basin, black shale series at the bottom of Cambrian is one of the important
marine facies hydrocarbon source rocks. This research focuses on the analysis of the isotope of
noble gas of 11 cherts. The R/R(a) ratio of chert in the Keping area is 0.032-0.319, and
(40)Ar/(36)Ar is 338-430. In Quruqtagh the R/R(a) ratio is 0.44-10.21, and (40)Ar/(36)Ar is
360-765. The R/R(a) ratio of chert increases with (40)Ar/(36)Ar from the west to the east
accordingly. They have evolved from the crust source area to the mantle source area in a direct
proportion. Surplus argon (40)Ar(E) in chert is in direct proportion to the R/R(a). ratio,
indicating that it has the same origin of excess argon as in fluid and mantle source helium.
Comparison of the R/R(a) ratios between the west and the east shows that the chert in the
eastern part formed from the activity system of the bottom hydrothermal venting driven by the
mantle source, where the material and energy of crust and mantle had a strong interaction in
exchange; whereas in the western part, chert deposited from the floating of hydrothermal
plume undersea bottom, which is far away from the Centre of activities of the hydrothermal
fluid of ocean bottom. In addition, from noble gas isotope composition of chert, it is suggested
that the ocean anoxia incident happened at the black shale of the Cambrian bottom probably
because of the large-scaled ocean volcanoes and the following hydrothermal activities.

AB The effects of salinity on the growth and energy budget of juvenile cobia, Rachycentron
canadum, were evaluated. Triplicate tanks with ten fish per tank (initial weight 17.58 +/- 0.26
g/fish, mean +/- SD) reared at salinities of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 ppt were fed with fresh
squid to satiety for 15 d. Results indicated that there were no significant differences in daily
ration level in wet weight (RL(w)), dry weight (RL(d)), and energy (RL(e)) of the fish. There
were also no significant variations in daily fecal production (f(e)) and apparent digestibility
coefficient of energy (ADC(e)) among salinity treatments. Specific growth rates (SGRs) in wet
weight (SGR(w)), dry weight (SGR(d)), and energy (SGR(e)) showed domed curves relative
to salinity. Quadratic regression analyses of SGR(w), SGR(d), and SGR(e) against salinity
indicated that the optimal salinity for maximal growth of juvenile cobia was 29.9, 29.9, and
28.5 ppt, respectively. Similar to the trend of SGR, food conversion efficiency for juvenile
cobia in wet weight (FCE(w)), dry weight (FCE(d)), and energy (FCE(e)) increased with
the increases in salinity, maximized at 30 ppt, and then decreased when salinity reached 35
ppt.

TI Morphology, ecology, and contaminant removal efficiency of eight wetland plants with
differing root systems

AB The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that fibrous-root plants and
rhizomatic-root plants are characterized by different root morphologies, root growth and
distribution, and contaminant removal capabilities. Four fibrous-root and four rhizomatic-root
wetland plants were studied in mono-cultured microcosms which received wastewater.
Fibrous-root plants had significantly greater (P < 0.05) small-size root (diameter a parts per
thousand currency sign 1 mm) biomass and a larger (P < 0.05) root surface area per plant than
the rhizomatic-root plants and exhibited accelerated growth in both shoots and roots compared
to the rhizomatic-root plants. Fibrous-root plants developed the majority of their root biomass
increment within a shallower gravel medium than the rhizomatic-root plants. All plants
demonstrated fast root biomass growth from July to September. The wetland microcosms
planted with fibrous-root plants showed significantly higher (P < 0.05) ammonium-nitrogen
(NH(4)-N) and nitrate-nitrogen (NO(3)-N) removal rates from July to December than those
planted with the rhizomatic-root plants. These results suggest that root characteristics of
wetland plants, which are related to their shoot and root growth, root distribution, and
decontamination ability, can be used in the selection of wetland plants with a higher
contaminant removal capacity and in the construction of a multi-species wetland plant
community.

AB A hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposite film of chitosan/sol-gel/multi-walled carbon
nanotubes was constructed for the immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). This film
was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Direct electron transfer (DET) and
bioelectrocatalysis of HRP incorporated into the composite film were investigated. The results
indicate that the film can provide a favorable microenvironment for HRP to perform DET on
the surface of glassy carbon electrodes with a pair of quasi-reversible redox waves and to

AB The cDNA of pearl oyster Pinctada fucata Hsp70 (designated PFHsp70) was cloned by EST
and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) techniques. The full length of PFHsp70 cDNA
was 2376 bp, consisting of a 5'-terminal untranslated region (UTR) of 89 bp, a 3' terminal
UTR of 328 bp, and an open reading frame (ORF) of 1959 bp encoding a polypeptide of 652
amino acids with a theoretical molecular weight of 71.42 kDa and an estimated isoelectric
point of 5.18. BLAST analysis revealed that the PFHsp70 gene shared high similarity with
other Hsp70 genes. PFHsp70 contained all the three classical Hsp70 family signatures. The
results indicated that the PFHsp70 was a member of the heat shock protein 70 family.
Fluorescent real-time quantitative RT-PCR was used to examine the expression of PFHsp70
gene in haemocytes of P. fucata after the challenge of bacteria Vibrio alginolyticus. There was
a clear time-dependent expression pattern of PFHsp70 after bacterial challenge, and the
mRNA expression reached a maximum level at 4 h post-challenge, which returned to control
level after 32 h. The up-regulated mRNA expression of PFHsp70 in P. fucata after bacterial
challenge indicates that the Hsp70 gene is inducible and involved in immune response. (C)

TI Molecular typing and identification of Bdellovibrio-and-like organisms isolated from seawater

AB To apply and compare two PCR-based methods for typing saltwater Bdellovibrio-and-like
organisms (BALOs) and to understand ecological and phylogenetic aspects of the BALOs
isolated from shrimp mariculture systems. Using double-layer agar technique, the numbers of
culturable BALOs that lyse Vibrio alginolyticus were found to be 10-10(3) PFU ml(-1) in the
surface water samples. A total of 130 BALOs isolates were differentiated into five phylotypes
by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis targeting the 16S rDNA V3 region and four
phylotypes by amplified rDNA restriction analysis of the Bacteriovoracaceae-specific 16S
rDNA fragment respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of representative isolates showed that all
of them were identified as Bacteriovorax spp., but affiliated with four different clusters in the
family Bacteriovoracaceae. The two PCR-based methods both can be chosen to rapidly type
the saltwater BALOs at cluster level. And the relatively large numbers of BALOs with various
phylotypes recovered from the same habitats suggested that these predators might play
important ecological role in shrimp mariculture environments. We proposed two effective
methods to distinguish rapidly large numbers of BALOs isolates and our results would be
helpful to understand the diversity and function of BALOs in mariculture environments.

three-dimensional void fraction to several geometrical parameters. This allows the exact
voidage evaluation for the frequently occurring case of having particles not wholly
contained within one grid cell regardless its shape. Failing to accurately account for these
common particle configurations in dense gas-particle systems has proven detrimental to the

TI Preparation of solder pads by selective laser scanning
SO CHINESE OPTICS LETTERS
AB We propose a new laser preparation technique to solder Sn-Ag3.5-Cu0.7 on a copper clad
laminate (CCL). The experiment is conducted by selective laser heating and melting the thin
solder layer and then preprinting it; on CCL in order to form the matrix with solder pads.
Through the analysis of macro morphology of the matrix with solder pads and
microstructure of single pads, this technique is proved to be suitable for preparing solder pads
and that the solder pads are of good mechanical properties. The results also reveal that high
frequency laser pulse is beneficial to the formation of better solder pad, and that the 12-W
fiber laser with a bears diameter of 0.030 min can solder Sn-Ag3.5-Cu0.7 successfully on CCL
at 500-kHz pulse frequency. The optimized parameters of laser soldering on CCL are as
follows: the laser power is 12 W, the scanning speed is 1.0 mm/s, the beam diameter is
0.030 mm, the lead-free solder is Sn-Ag3.5-Cu0.7, and the laser pulse frequency is 500 kHz.

TI Protective Effects of Squid Ink Extract Towards Hemopoietic Injuries Induced by
Cyclophosphamine

AB To investigate the protective effects of squid ink in chemotherapy, BALB/c mice were used as
animal models of injuries induced by cyclophosphamine, a well known chemotherapeutic drug.
The mice were randomly divided into five groups with the same number of males and
females in each group. At the end of the experiment, animals were sacrificed to investigate
organ indexes and antioxidant ability of the spleen, peripheral blood profile and quantities of
bone marrow nucleated cells. Results showed that the hemopoietic function of mice was
injured by cyclophosphamine, as indicated by decreases of contents of erythrocytes,
leukocytes, hemoglobin and bone marrow nucleated cells (P<0.01), while platelets were not
affected (P>0.05), as well as modification of organ indexes (P<0.05) and spleen antioxidant
ability (P<0.05 or P<0.01), whereas sepia extract markedly increased the levels of erythrocytes,
leukocytes, hemoglobin and bone marrow nucleated cells (P<0.01), but not platelets (P>0.05),
and reversed the effects of cyclophosphamine on organ indexes and antioxidant ability of
spleen (P<0.01 or P<0.05). In addition, squid ink extract did not change marrow
hemopoiesis but improved the antioxidant ability of spleen in the animals. The data suggest
that squid ink extract can protect the hemopoietic system from chemotherapeutic injury and
could be employed to develop cell-protective drugs for use in clinical treatment of tumours.

AB The genetic polymorphisms of 17 microsatellites were investigated in four indigenous
laying-type duck breeds in China. The average number of alleles (Na) and average rates of
homozygotes of each breed were counted. Accordingly, allele frequencies of the 17
microsatellites, polymorphism information content (PIC), mean heterozygosity (H) and
genetic distances (Ds) were also calculated. Moreover, dendrograms using UPGMA and the
neighbour-joining method were produced. The four breeds have a high average PIC (0.643)
and H (0.682). Ds are between 0.514 and 0.662, the gene differentiation among the four breeds
is 14.4%.

AB 2,4-Diamino-6-aryl-1,3,5-triazines were synthesized by using a solid-supported approach in
which monoarylsubstituted triazines were captured directly from the crude reaction mixture by
resin-bound amines. The effects of the synthesized compounds on inhibition activities against
tumor cell lines (PC-3, K562, A549, and HO8910) were examined. Most of the obtained
compounds demonstrated remarkable antiproliferative activities against K562, PC-3, and
HO8910 cell lines. Particularly, compounds 8c exhibited prominent inhibition activity with
IC(50) values of 1.01, 2.23, and 1.06 mu M, respectively. The structure-activity relationships
of 2,4-diamino-6-aryl-1,3,5-triazines are also discussed.

TI Habitat suitability index of Chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) from July to September in the
East China Sea

AB The habitat quality of Chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) in the East China Sea has been a
subject of concern in the last 10 years due to large fluctuations in annual catches of this stock.
For example, the Chinese light-purse seine fishery recorded 84000 tons in 1999 compared
to 17000 tons in 2006. The fluctuations have been attributed to variability in habitat quality.
The habitat suitability Index (HSI) has been widely used to describe fish habitat quality and in
fishing ground forecasting. In this paper we use catch data and satellite derived
environmental variables to determine habitat suitability indices for Chub mackerel during July
to September in the East China Sea. More than 90% of the total catch was found to come from
the areas with sea surface temperature of 28.0A degrees-29.4A degrees C, sea surface salinity
of 33.6-34.2 psu, chlorophyll-a concentration of 0.15-0.50 mg/m(3) and sea surface height
anomaly of -0.1-1.1 m. Of the four conventional models of HSI, the Arithmetic Mean Model
(AMM) was found to be most suitable according to Akaike Information Criterion analysis.
Based on the estimation of AMM in 2004, the monthly HSIs in the waters of 123A
degrees-125A degrees E and 27A degrees 30'aEuro"28A degrees 00' N were more than 0.6
during July to September, which coincides with the catch distribution in the same time period.
This implies that AMM can yield a reliable prediction of the Chub mackerel's habitat in the
East China Sea.

TI Optimization of process parameters for supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of Passiflora
seed oil by response surface methodology

AB Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the process parameters of
supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of the passion fruit seed oil. The effects of temperature,
pressure and extraction time on the oil yield were investigated. Results showed that the data
were adequately fitted into the second-order polynomial model. The linear and quadratic of
independent variables, temperature, pressure and extraction time, the interactions between
temperature and extraction time, pressure and extraction time had a significant effect on the oil
yield. It was predicted that the optimum extraction process parameters within the
experimental ranges would be the extraction temperature of 56 degrees C and pressure of 26
MPa and extraction time of 4 h. Under these conditions, the oil yield was 25.83%. The color of
passion fruit seed oil extracted by supercritical carbon dioxide is golden orange. Its physical
and chemical properties come up to the required standard for edible oil. The content of
unsaturated fatty acid in passion fruit seed oil was up to 89.43% and the content of linoleic

AB Cytochrome P450 aroinatase (P450arom) is all enzyme responsible for the conversion of
androgen to estrogen. The P450arom plays all important role in gonadal differentiation and sex
determination in teleosts. To Study the role of gonadal cytochrome P450 aromatase
(P450aromA) in sex differentiation, the cDNA was isolated from the ovary of the half-smooth
tongue-sole, Cynoglossus semilaevis. The deduced amino acid sequence exhibited high
homology with P450arom of other teleosts. Alignment and phylogenetic analysis of the
P450arom showed that the tongue sole P450aromA belonged to the gonadal P450arom
Subfamily. The 5'-flanking region of the P450aromA gene contains two Ad4 binding motifs
and a half site of the palindrome sequence of the estrogen-responsive element (the ERE half).
P450aromA transcripts were highly abundant in the Ovary, less abundant in the testis, but not
present in the brain, liver, spleen, kidney, muscle, skin, heart, head kidney, gill, intestine, or
eyes by RT-PCR. The P450aromA mRNA increased with gonad development, but was less
abundant ill the testis compare to the ovary in all phases. Highly abundant P450aromA was
detected in the female ovary, but was less abundant in the testis in neo-males obtained by
methyltestosterone or temperature treatment. These results imply that P450arom may be
involved in gonadal development and sex differentiation in the tongue sole. (c) 2008 Elsevier

AB The grid altimetry data between 1993 and 2006 near the Philippines were analyzed by the
method of Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) to study the variation of bifurcation of the
North Equatorial Current at the surface of the Pacific. The relatively short-term signals with
periods of about 6 months, 4 months, 3 months and 2 months are found besides seasonal and
interannual variations mentioned in previous studies. Local wind stress curl plays an important
role in controlling variation of bifurcation latitude except in the interannual timescale. The
bifurcation latitude is about 13.3A degrees N in annual mean state and it lies at the
northernmost position (14.0A degrees N) in January, at the southernmost position (12.5A
degrees N) in July. The amplitude of variation of bifurcation latitude in a year is 1.5A degrees,
which can mainly be explained as the contributions of the signals with periods of about 1 year
(1.2A degrees) and 0.5 year (0.3A degrees).

AB Pseudodiaptomus dubia is a calanoid copepod that is distributed widely in the
estuarine-coastal waters of Asia and is a dominant copepod in the shrimp grow-out ponds in
southern China. A laboratory culture experiment was conducted to evaluate the influences of
water temperature on larval development, survival, and reproduction. Results indicate that
within a temperature range from 15 to 35 degrees C, larval development increases as the
temperature increases. The water temperature for optimal larval survival rate ranges from 20 to
35 degrees C. Longevity and egg hatching time decrease as the temperature increases from 20
to 35 degrees C. Total fecundity and reproduction frequency increase as the water
temperature increases, with the maximum at 30 degrees C. Fecundity and reproduction
frequency decrease when the temperature exceeds 30 degrees C. Intrinsic growth rate (r(m))
ranges from 0.168 to 0.195 at 25 to 30 degrees C; net reproduction rate (R(0)) and finite
growth rate (lambda) are 163 to 264 and 1.183 to 1.215, respectively, when the temperature is
greater than 20 and 35 degrees C; population doubling time (t) varies from 3.556 to 4.128 days
at temperatures less than 20 and 35 degrees C. Population generation time (T) is negatively
correlated with temperature, with the optimal population growth rate at 25 to 30 degrees C.

AB This paper presents an open reversed Brayton cycle with regeneration using moist air for deep
freeze cooled by circulating water, and proves its feasibility through performance simulation.
Pinch technology is used to analyze the cooling of the wet air after compressor and the water
used for cooling wet air after compressor. Its refrigeration depends mainly on the sensible heat
of air and the latent heat of water vapor, its performance is more efficient than a conventional
air-cycle, and the utilization of turbo-machinery makes it possible. The adoption of this cycle
will make deep freeze easily and reduce initial cost because very low temperature, about -55
degrees C, air is obtained. The sensitivity analysis of coefficient of performance to the
efficiency of compressor and the efficiency of compressor, and the results of the cycle are also
given. The simulation results show that the COP of this system depends on the temperature
before turbine, the efficiency of compressor and the efficiency of compressor, and varies with
the wet bulb temperature of the outdoor air. Humid air is a perfect working fluid for deep

TI Autolysis of shrimp head by gradual temperature and nutritional quality of the resulting
hydrolysate

AB Autolysis method was investigated for protein recovery from shrimp head (SH) of white
shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). Autolysis of SH by several temperature conditions (40 degrees C,
50 degrees C, 60 degrees C and gradual temperature) at its initial pH showed protein recovery
of 43.6%, 73.6%, 50.3% and 87.4%, respectively. Autolysis of SH by gradual temperature
(temperature was risen 5 degrees C every half an hour, from 40 degrees C to 70 degrees C
served best for the preparation of autolysis hydrolysate (AH) with the maximum degree of
hydrolysis (DH) 48.6% and the maximum protein recovery 87.4%. Subsequently, the chemical
components of SH and its AH obtained by gradual temperature were investigated and
comparably evaluated. Protein contents of SH and AH by gradual temperature method
amounted to 60.6% and 88.8% (dry basis), respectively. Both SH and AH had high contents of
tasting or functional amino acids. The contents of essential amino acids (EAA) of SH and AH
were 340.26 and 405.30 mg/g protein, respectively. The amino acids scores of SH and AH
were 73 and 96, respectively. The EAA of AH covered 96-100% of the FAO/WHO ideal
protein. The high performance size exclusion chromatography of AH showed that with the
increasing of DH values, there occurred a larger amount of smaller polypeptides with
molecular weight <5000 Da. The nutritional value of SH could be greatly enhanced by gradual

TI Magnetocaloric effect in (La(0.47)Gd(0.2))Sr(0.33)MnO(3) polycrystalline nanoparticles

AB In this paper, nanosized particles of (La(0.47)Gd(0.2))Sr(0.33)MnO(3) perovskite-type oxides
were successfully synthesized at a relatively low calcinated temperature at 800 degrees C for
10 h using amorphous molecular alloy as precursor. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron
diffraction (ED) revealed that the resulting product is of pure single-phase rhombohedral
structure. The Curie temperature T(C) and magnetic entropy change (MCE) in
(La(0.47)Gd(0.2))Sr(0.33)MnO(3) polycrystalline nanoparticles are determined and compared
to those of similar systems prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method. The
Curie temperature TC is shifted to 298 k, and a relatively large MCE with a broad peak around
Curie temperature is observed in (La(0.47)Gd(0.2))Sr(0.33)MnO(3) polycrystalline particles.
These results suggested that this material is a suitable candidate as working substance in

TI An Extension to Nonlinear Sum-Difference Inequality and Applications
SO ADVANCES IN DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS
AB We establish a general form of sum-difference inequality in two variables, which includes
both more than two distinct nonlinear sums without an assumption of monotonicity and a
nonconstant term outside the sums. We employ a technique of monotonization and use a
property of stronger monotonicity to give an estimate for the unknown function. Our result
enables us to solve those discrete inequalities considered in the work of W.-S. Cheung (2006).
Furthermore, we apply our result to a boundary value problem of a partial difference equation

TI The Effects of Different Levels of Dietary Protein and L-Carnitine on Blood Sugar and Lipids
of the New GIFT Strain of Juvenile Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

AB The new GIFT (Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia) strain of Nile tilapia is a popular
cultivated fish in Asia, but intensive aquaculture using nutritionally imbalanced feed has led to
disorder of lipid metabolisms. An 8-week feeding experiment was conducted in order to
assess the effects of different levels of L-carnitine (0, 200, 400, 600, and 800 mg/kg) and
dietary protein (22, 25, and 28%) on blood sugar and blood lipid contents of the new juvenile
GIFT strain of Nile tilapia. Results showed that dietary protein and L-carnitine had significant
influences on glucose (GLU), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol
(TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) in the blood serum.
The contents of GLU and HDL-C increased with the increases in dietary protein and
L-carnitine levels, while the contents of TC, LDL-C, and TG decreased with the increases in
dietary protein and L-carnitine levels. The interactive effect of both dietary protein and
L-carnitine was most significant on GLU (p = 0.0001), followed by TG (p = 0.001), TC (p =
0.005), HDL-C (p = 0.056), and LDL-C (p = 0.109). These results suggested that high levels
of dietary protein and L-carnitine supplementation reduce blood lipids and the burden of the
fish liver.

AB This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of the dynamic temperature field on a
milling insert with complex groove. Experimental measurements of milling temperature using
the thermocouple technique were performed. A mathematical model of the temperature field of
the insert was established. A finite element model of the insert was built to simulate the
temperature field. The boundary condition was determined by the experimental data and
mathematical calculation, and then the temperature field of the milling insert was simulated
through finite element analysis. The temperature distribution in a cut-in/cut-out cycle was
obtained.
