Social Work Programs Offer High School Credit
Academic Year 2010-11
A.
Life Skills Seminar Program
School social worker, Mrs. Archibald, will make available to all students
at Community High School 8-10 opportunities to attend presentations and
educational seminars focused on Life Skills and Healthy Living. These
presentations/seminars will be announced as they become available.
Upcoming events will be communicated through signs that will be posted
in the lunchroom. A sign-up sheet for each seminar will be taped to the
desk in the lunchroom. It is important that students sign-up because
seminars with low sign-up numbers may get cancelled. Additionally, it is
the student’s responsibility to remember to attend the seminar on the day
of the presentation. Reminders will not be provided by any CHS staff
members.
Students who participate and attend these presentations/seminars are
required to write a 500 word reflection essay, regarding what the
presentation meant to him/her, and what he/she has taken from it. If a
student attends 4 Life Skills presentations/seminars and completes 4
essays, then he/she is eligible to receive .50 credits towards his/her high
school graduation requirements. Students must attend a minimum of 4
seminars and complete all 4 essays. Partial credit/participation will not be
offered. This program provides opportunities for parents/guardians of our
students to attend after-school Life Skills seminars as well. At least 2 of
the required 4 seminars must occur outside of the regular scheduled school
day. Students may also attend a presentation/seminar that is offered in the
community. Examples of community seminars include: smoking
cessation, parenting skills, CPR training…etc. The student will be required
to submit an attendance verification form from the community seminar
that he/she attended and an additional piece of documentation (i.e. a
business card from the presenter, a piece of literature from the
presentation/seminar, a flyer, a workbook…etc.). In summary, the
requirements are as follows:
1. Attend 4 presentations/seminars
 at least 2 must be outside of the school day
 at least 2 must be provided by the school
 Attendance verification form and additional documentation
must be provided for any presentations/seminars attended
within the community.
2. Write a 500 word reflection essay for each seminar
 What did you learn from the presentation/seminar?
 How will you apply what you learned to your life?
 How has the presentation/seminar influenced your thoughts
on this topic?

B.
Social Work Groups
School social worker, Mrs. Archibald, will conduct many small groups
throughout the school year. Participants will be recommended by staff
based on attendance and ability to miss class time. Students may also
apply to a particular group of interest. The groups will run during the
school day once a week, for 8 – 10 weeks. The topics will vary, but may
include Life Skills, Character Strength Building, Goal Setting, Grief and
Loss, Self-Esteem Building, New Students, Teen Parents, and Stress
Management.
Students who receive this opportunity will be required to attend a
minimum of 70% of the group sessions and participate according to the
group leaders expectations. It is solely the responsibility of the student
to follow the group calendar and remember to report to group each
week. The reason for the absence is irrelevant—students must attend 70%
of the sessions in order to be eligible for .25 Life Skills credit. The student
will also be responsible for writing a 500 word refection essay regarding
what the sessions meant to him/her, what he/she learned, and how he/she
will apply what he/she learned to his/her life and future choices. Once
these requirements are completed, the student is eligible to receive .25
credits towards his/her high school graduation requirements.
