Lesson Summary: Europe in 1914 was on the brink of war.
After an assassination, the nations of Europe were drawn one by one
into what would be called the Great War, or World War I.

Day 1 (11/29/10) (Monday)
Opening (Whole Group) Class will study WWI British Tank Captioned
Photo on page 378-379. Students will respond verbally to the following
question: This photograph shows a British tank and British soldiers during a
battle in 1917. World War I marked the first time that tanks were used in combat.
Analyzing Visuals
How do you think the use of tanks during World War I would change the nature
of warfare? Explain your answer, referring to details from the photograph.
(Students Should have their text books Daily)
Activity 2. (Whole group/teacher Led): Students will volunteer answers
to the Geography Starting Points: European Alliances and Military
Forces, 1914 as the teacher prints them on the interactive monitor, or
writes them on the board.

*The teacher will then preview the “Before you read section on page 381
with the class.
Main Activity: (Individual Activity) Students will complete the
Introduction handout, using the “Before you read section on page 381.
This assignment was designed to familiarize themselves with the
promotion standard, main ideas, objectives, and key terms/people
associated with this section
Closing Activity: (Whole Class) The class will begin reading the section.
1st the teacher will read the Inside Story: How did an archduke’s trip
lead to war? The teacher will discuss the events explained in the section.
2nd Students will begin reading p.382, Europe on the Brink of War, and
War Breaks out
Homework: 1. Section Vocabulary Builder Handout, and 2. Complete
Section Introduction Handout
Day 2 (11/30/10) (Tuesday)
Opening Activity: (Whole Class) Students will copy Notes from
p. 382/TV/Board on The Causes of WWI: Militarism, Alliances,
Imperialism, Nationalism
*The teacher will check the students’ completed homework while they
are taking notes.
Main Activity: (Whole Class) Continue reading section 1, p.383-384
*Students will study the map of WWI Battles, 1914, and then verbally
answer and then copy the following interpreting map skills questions:
1. Location Where was the Western Front located at this time? What were the
results of the major battles fought there?

2. Movement Describe the movements of the Allied Powers and the Central
Powers.
Closing Activity: Students will read Faces of History: Kaiser Wilhelm II
page 384, and answer the following question verbally, and copy the
answer in their notes:
How did Wilhelm help cause World War I?

Day 3 (12/1/10) Wednesday
Opening Activity: (Whole Class) Notes TBA (Using Graphic Organizer)
Activity 1: (Whole Class) Complete reading page 384, “Fighting in
1914”
Closing Activity: (Individual) Students will complete the section
Assessment on page 384, numbers 1-4. The students must use complete
sentences to complete this assignment.
Homework: Chapter 12 Sec. 1 Study Guide, and study Key Terms
Day 4 (12/2/10) Thursday
Opening Activity: (Whole Class) After the teacher checks for
completeness, The teacher will take student volunteers to help review
answers to the study guide, and the section assessment.
*Students may need an additional 10-15 minutes to complete the section
assessment before reviewing it.
Closing Activity: History and Geography WWI Early Fighting handout
Homework: Study Key Terms, and complete any owed work for this
section.
