Unsung Hero Award Description
The Unsung Hero Award was initiated by the North Haven Rotary Club in 2009 in order to recognize and
honor North Haven High School students for their outstanding work within their school and the
community at large. The founders determined that, “An Unsung Hero is one who goes above and
beyond for the goodness of others, without receiving compensation;” adding, “one who does for others
without a second thought.” This description parallels the Rotary motto known as “Service Above Self”.
After recognizing more than 20 students who were recommended solely by the NHHS staff, the Rotary
club decided to expand its program in order to include teenagers worthy of the award outside the local
public high school, as well. Therefore, by also seeking recommendations from the community at large,
the club will now recognize any high school resident in grades 9-12, regardless of the school attended.
Each school quarter, the North Haven Rotary Club recognizes an Unsung Hero accompanied by his/her
family and the person making the nomination at a breakfast meeting. To make a nomination, you may
send a note to the Unsung Hero Committee, c/o North Haven Rotary Club, PO Box 202, North Haven, CT
06473. To nominate via email, you may submit a form to nhrotary.unsunghero1@gmail.com. The
nominating form is also available on the club’s website at www.nhrotary.org. Nominations must be
received by February 10, 2014 to be eligible for the next award to be presented this coming March.
There is a form requesting your name, address, and telephone number, as well as those of the
candidate. You must also include your reasons for the choice based on the following criteria:
 Good character, as demonstrated through conduct within the school and community
 Student in grades 9-12 very involved in service to others within the school and community
 Good school performance, with grades at least within the C+ to B+ range
 Typically, has not previously been recognized for his/her accomplishments
In summary, these are just good students doing good things that generally go unrecognized.
