El Camino Real: Highway Through History
The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission, The Nipomo Arts Commission (NAC) and
the Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos (DANA) present El Camino Real: Highway Through
History, an exhibition which celebrates the historical development of Rancho Nipomo,
as well as historical El Camino Real between Mission San Luis Obispo and Mission
Santa Ines.
The juried artwork was first exhibited on June 5 at the 2nd annual “Arts at the Adobe”
event. The event was open to Central Coast artists in both Santa Barbara and San Luis
Obispo counties. Marti Fast, professor of art from Allan Hancock, was the juror. Fast
teaches classes in figure drawing and watercolor and also serves as the college's art
gallery director. Her drawings are featured in two of the "Strokes of Genius" books
published by North Light Books. She has co-chaired the Santa Maria Arts Council
Individual Grants program for the last 15 years, and is a frequent juror for area art
groups.
Organized by Cheryl Weiss, professor of fine arts, Allan Hancock College and Vice
President of the Nipomo Arts Commission, El Camino Real – Highway Through
History features images of the Dana Adobe, landscapes of Nipomo, historical buildings,
interpretations of the Camino Real, Chumash culture, rancho era, agriculture and
labor. Weiss previously curated Rec la mation for the Santa Barbara Arts
Commission and Peace, Love, and Rock ‘n Roll: Music Posters of the 1960s for Allan
Hancock College. El Camino Real – Highway Through History will feature a closing
reception on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 from 4-6pm. The general public is invited
to meet the artists and celebrate the exhibition.
