Satirical Essay
Overview:
Jonathon Swift uses satire to comment upon a social issue of his
time. Similarly, you will choose a contemporary social issue and
propose a satirical solution. You will spend your essay using
satirical devices to persuade that your solution is indeed a valid
one. More specifically, I want you to choose at least three
supporting reasons as to why your proposal will work.
**You do not have to take Swift’s somewhat distasteful approach.
You can merely offer an absurd, illogical, humorous proposal.
However, if you do wish to take the distasteful route, be sure to run
your idea by me.
Guidelines:
 Exigence: You will need to address a real world, important
issue.
 Clear satirical thesis (proposal) and at least 3 supporting
reasons
 Ample evidence, cited if you include research
 Clear attempts to employ the 8 satirical devices that we
studied and to use ethos, pathos, and logos
 2-3 full pages
 Error-free, polished paper
Due Dates:
 Monday, February 1st : Outline
 Friday, February 5th: Rough Draft (3 copies)
 Monday, February 8th: Final Draft (Rubric, Final, Rough,
Outline, pre-writing)
