the statement and Edwards’ sermon.
o This visual should take ONE entire side of white paper.
o The visual must be in color, detailed, and neat and original in content (no computer work).
On the FRONT of your visual –
1. Put the quote(s) which you are representing. Be sure to properly use quotation
2. marks.
3. In parenthesis, next to your quote or beneath your quote, write the page number
of the quote. I.e. (page 101 column 1-2)

5. Capitalize correctly!
Step 3: (Constructed response of 2 paragraphs) 20 points/ 10 each paragraph
 Paragraph #1: Create a well-developed paragraph that explains the quote AND
the image you created as an appeal (emotional, ethical, logical).


Properly use quotation marks and page numbers (in quotes).
Italicize the quote reference.

Be sure to have an overall topic sentence (which answers the prompt). (Put the t.s. in bold.)

Be sure to have an overall concluding sentence which sums up the paragraph. (Put the c.s. in bold.)

Be sure the paragraph is indented 5 spaces, edited, bolded and italicized correctly.


Step 4: (Paragraph #2 of constructed response)
Create a second paragraph that answers the following prompt. Given contemporary religions, world
politics and global cultures, How effective is the use of fear as a motivator for human behavior?
*Give considerable thought to answering this prompt. Make it very clear with a detailed example and
explanation of the details/response and why.
*To connect the two paragraphs, you must use something similar to the following statement as a
transition just before your topic sentence.
It is clear Jonathan Edwards attempted to use fear to manipulate his audience. Even today, we
see evidence of the use of fear as a motivating factor, or as a device to influence the ideas and behaviors of
others.
*Follow this topic sentence with your STAND on fear as a motivating factor.
*Avoid the pronoun I…stick to “people, citizens, we, adults, Americans, voters,” ANYTHING that
addresses a larger audience in an appropriate and inclusive manner.
*This paragraph should be significantly longer and more explanatory (for obvious reasons related to
the time and place in your life, compared to Edwards’ life) than the first paragraph.
*Bold your topic sentence and concluding sentences in this paragraph as well.
