A Raisin in the Sun Final Performance Task
Now that we have completed a reading of A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, you
will put all the knowledge that you have obtained to practical use through a group project.
By the end of this project you will have a deeper understanding of the major events and
themes in the play, and you will learn how to:




Think creatively
Work Cooperatively
Solve problems
Relate themes in the play to real life
Working in groups you will focus on one of the following problems faced by the
characters in A Raisin in the Sun:

-Zuleiny, Juliana, Juan, Joslin, Roberto

Once your group has chosen a topic and has discussed it with me, you will complete the
following for your final project:
Research your topic in depth exploring the following questions:







What is the issue - define it (dictionary definitions are fine, but I also want to know
how your group defines it).
How long has this issue existed in America? A minimum of two examples
How does this issue exist today? A minimum of two examples
How does this issue exist in "A Raisin in the Sun"? A minimum of two examples
with textual support and citations
How does this issue hinder/promote the desire for the American Dream? You must
first - define what the American Dream is - Each group may have their own
definitions.
Define what the American Dream was for the Younger Family using the text for
support
Final question: Did the Youngers, in your group’s opinion, achieve the American
Dream?
After you have compiled all your information, your group will act as social rights
activists who are trying to promote awareness of your topic through a group blog. You
will work together to create a blog to present all the information above, plus the
following:
1. At least two creative images that represent the topic that you researched as a
group. Flickr.com is a great source for these, but be sure to give credit to the
source of the photograph (who took the photo) through citation.
2. One video relevant to your topic. This can be a self generated video in which
your group creates some representation of your topic, or it can be from a website
like You Tube, but make sure it is appropriate to the topic you are researching.
3. 2 new discussion questions relevant to your topic and the play posted on the group
discussion forum. These questions should be open ended, and thought provoking.
4. A solution or solution(s) for solving the problem that your group researched, with
resources on where others can turn for help.
