Lesson Plan for Groundhog Day Poem Assessed Need: I have noticed that the students in my classroom need to work on: /ing/ word family Standards: McREL LA Std.5.I.5: Uses basic elements of phonetic analysis to decode unknown words Text I will use to demonstrate the strategy I plan to teach is: Language chart poem - ”The Groundhog” Materials needed for this lesson are: Language chart, /ing/ sentence strip, large letter cards d,k,p,r,s,w to make new words, identical small letter cards for students Colored highlighting tape Purpose of the lesson is: Locate /ing/ words in poem Develop new words using consonants SEQUENCE OF FOCUS LESSON Activate background knowledge by asking about Groundhog Day and shadows experiment MODEL read aloud twice and invite students to read along Parts to emphasize Put tape over /ing/ in thing Discuss vocabulary SCAFFOLD ask students to place highlighting tape over /ing/ words Prompt as needed by repeating word slowly, chunking word to focus on /ing/ Questions to ask What do we know about Groundhog Day? What new words can we make for our new word family? - use letter cards to support their answers COACH Students practice with partners Tell your neighbor the words in the poem that end with /ing/ Write words in Word Family journal ASSESS These are the students who need extra support Collect notes on Jose, Eileen, and Mark Independent Practice Students will practice using the strategy during activity time Students will use letter cards to make words from the /ing/ family and write them into their Word Families journal on the /ing/ page.
