To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee
English 9H - Mrs. Meyer
Before we begin our study of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, we will examine
certain aspects of the novel to enhance our overall understanding of the work. Below you
will find six topics to be discussed and presented in groups.
Each group must:

Speak for 5-7 minutes

Present a visual piece to enhance the topic

Present a paper with a works cited page (MLA format) containing all information
used in the group discussion. You are expected to list at least three sources; one
must be a book.

Have all group members contribute during the presentation
Topics:
1. The Civil War: Give a brief history of the Civil War and its aftermath.
What was Alabama’s role? Consider how the United States changed after
this war, especially The South.
2. Segregation: What was life like for African-Americans in the United
States before the Civil Rights Movement and after the Civil War?
3. Alabama History: Discuss the history, geography, points of interest and
any other interesting information about the state of Alabama. Be sure to
include information on “Southern Hospitality”.
4. Harper Lee: Provide background information on the author of To Kill a
Mockingbird, including her inspiration for writing the novel.
5. The Great Depression: Discuss the causes and effects of the era. What
was life like for American during the 1930s?
6. Truman Capote: Provide some background information and list the
accomplishments for the man who is considered to be one of Harper Lee’s
best friends and the model for Dill Harris in To Kill a Mockingbird.
We will work on this project in class this week and will present on
Tuesday, March 5th
