English 12: Hamlet

Composing a Shakespearean Valentine

Directions : Since it’s nearly Valentine’s Day, I would like you to compose a love letter or

Valentine from one character in Hamlet to another. Your message should be a minimum of 100 words and should be creatively decorated (you may choose to imitate the artistic style of love letters from the Renaissance or you may take a more modern approach). Keep in mind that the underlying goal of this assignment is for you to demonstrate an understanding of the characters and plot of Hamlet. Here are some suggestions to help you successfully complete this assignment:

You may choose to write from Hamlet to Ophelia or from Ophelia to Hamlet (imagine that the love letter was written prior to Hamlet’s “madness” and may have been one of the tokens returned to Hamlet by Ophelia in the famous hallway scene).

You may choose to write from Claudius to Gertrude or from Gertrude to Claudius.

 You may want to attempt to mimic Shakespeare’s writing style or write a poem (even a sonnet). However, you may also write in modern English.

Once again, remember that the goal of this assignment is for you to demonstrate an understanding of the characters and plot in Hamlet.

This assignment will be worth 20 points , and scoring will be based on: your demonstration of understanding regarding the characters and plot in Hamlet, your grammatical correctness, and the quality and creativity of your decorations.
