Animal Farm Menu Activity

Propaganda Techniques: Ad Hominem, Ad Nauseum, Appeals to Authority,
Appeals to Fear, Appeals to Prejudice, Bandwagon, Plain Folks.
DIRECTIONS: Though you may be working in a group, each person should write on their own
paper. Identify which assignment you are doing, your name (underlined), and the names of
anyone you are working with. (Remember, no more than three in a group).
1. Choose five examples of propaganda from the chapters we’ve read, and draw a scene
depicting each type of propaganda used. Include a caption with a quote and page number for
each picture, and label the type of propaganda used.
2. You are working for Napoleon, and Squealer has enlisted you into the propaganda
department. Choose three types of propaganda techniques and create posters persuading the
animals to support Napoleon, hate Snowball, support the building of the Windmill, or some
other project that Napoleon would approve of. Include a caption in each picture labeling the
type of propaganda used. Find examples in the chapters of each type of propaganda and
include a quote and page numbers on the back of each poster.
3. Identify five examples of propaganda from the book (include a quote and page number for
each). Then write a short script for a commercial using some of these techniques persuading
other animals from other farms to rebel! Underline and label each technique you use in your
script.
4. You are working for SNOWBALL, and he is trying to take back the farm! Choose three
types of propaganda techniques and create posters from Snowball’s camp persuading the
animals to support Snowball, rebel against Napoleon, get other farms to rebel, or some other
project that you think Snowball would approve of. Include a caption in each picture labeling
the type of propaganda used. Find examples in the chapters of each type of propaganda
and include a quote and page numbers on the back of each poster.
5. Find each type of propaganda and where it appears in Animal Farm. Include a quote and
page number for each. Then write and decorate your own original slogans for Animal Farm,
one for each type of propaganda, and label the type of propaganda you are using.
