Directions: Each group will analyze the above texts. Compare & contrast each text for interpretive meaning
through the use of literary elements/poetic devices (see below for group assignment). The group will
represent their findings by creating a mini-poster reflecting their analysis. Mini-posters will be presented to
the class in a Gallery Walk format.
Group 1 - Investigate theme: What is the basic message about life or the human experience that each author
conveys? After examining each text, decide how they are the same or how they are different. How does each
author develop theme and convey his message?
Group 2 - Investigate sound devices: Compare and contrast the use of rhyme, rhythm, repetition, alliteration,
onomatopoeia, repetition in each text. How does each author use sound devices to create meaning and
develop tone & mood?
Group 3 - Investigate imagery: Compare and contrast the use of word choice in each text. Analyze each text
for sensory images through word choice including the use of figurative language.
