Is
really a monopoly?
After learning about Perfectly Competitive Markets, Monopolistic Markets,
Monopolistic Competitive Markets, and Oligopolistic Markets, you are going to
play Monopoly. Sounds exciting, right? But wait; is the game Monopoly really an
example of a monopolistic market? You will spend one day in class playing the
game Monopoly. Then using your notes, book, and your observations while
playing you will write a 5 paragraph essay, in response to one (1) of the
following questions:
1. Is Monopoly an actual monopolistic market? Explain using examples from
the game and the characteristics of the different types of markets.
2. How does Monopoly incorporate characteristics from all 4 types of markets?
Explain.
3. How does Monopoly incorporate the concept of government regulation
and/or price discrimination? Explain.
Essay Format: 1” margins, double spaced, 12-point font (either Times New
Roman or Ariel). Finally, before handing in your essay please check your spelling
and grammar.
The essay is worth 15 points.
