My Living Room Related section of pack: Housing Aim: to give learners practice in identifying and punctuating sentence beginnings and endings; to give personalised practice in writing a description of a living room Materials: A task sheet for each learner ESOL level: Access 3 SCQF level: 3 Time: 45 - 60 mins Preparation: Photocopies of the task sheet; a plan of the living room described to show the position of the items mentioned, maybe a transparency of the text In class: 1.) Using the plan of the living room elicit what the items are and where they are. 2.) Focusing on the text check that learners understand what the problem is. 3.) Start the re-writing as a class – if learners need more help use the transparency to elicit and mark sentence beginnings and endings with a slash. 4.) Learners rewrite the text. Encourage learners to use the lines as a guide and monitor. 5.) Stronger learners can write about their own living room and might be able to produce a plan to accompany it. Variation: If the class can produce several pieces of writing and several plans, these could be separated, the class can then read each description and match with the plan. What’s wrong? my living room is quite large it has a bay window which looks over the park the walls are cream and the carpet is green on one side there is a fireplace and some bookshelves the three-piece suite is also green and there is a coffee table in the middle the television is in the corner i don’t have a separate dining room so the dining table and chairs are also in the living room i have lots of plants and there are some pictures on the wall i like my living room very much Now rewrite it and use capital letters to start each sentence and full stops at the end of each sentence. There are nine sentences all together.
