Aim:
to give learners practice in identifying and punctuating sentence
beginnings and endings; to give personalised practice in writing a
description of a living room
Materials:
A task sheet for each learner
ESOL level:
Access 3
SCQF level:
3
Time:
45 - 60 mins
Preparation:
Photocopies of the task sheet; a plan of the living room described to show
the position of the items mentioned, maybe a transparency of the text
In class:
1.) Using the plan of the living room elicit what the items are and where they are.
2.) Focusing on the text check that learners understand what the problem is.
3.) Start the re-writing as a class – if learners need more help use the transparency to
elicit and mark sentence beginnings and endings with a slash.
4.) Learners rewrite the text. Encourage learners to use the lines as a guide and
monitor.
5.) Stronger learners can write about their own living room and might be able to
produce a plan to accompany it.
Variation:
If the class can produce several pieces of writing and several
plans, these could be separated, the class can then read each
description and match with the plan.
Assessment:
the task helps prepare learners for the following summative assessments:

the walls are cream and the carpet is green on one side there is a fireplace
and some bookshelves the three-piece suite is also green and there is a
coffee table in the middle the television is in the corner i don’t have a
separate dining room so the dining table and chairs are also in the living room
i have lots of plants and there are some pictures on the wall i like my living

Now rewrite it and use capital letters to start each sentence and full stops
at the end of each sentence. There are nine sentences all together.
