Essay #6 in class (Comparison/Contrast Essay)
The comparison and contrast essay obviously compares and/or contrasts two similar or
contrasting things (ideas, texts, objects, people, etc). In English classes, the comparison
and contrast essay will focus on two literary texts. Once again you have a choice of topic.
1. Write a “He Said/She Said” article for a magazine or newspaper. Your job as the
reporter is to remain objective while faithfully presenting both sides of the
argument.
a. He Said / She Said: a couple is breaking up or getting divorced; your
readers want to know what lead to the break up; you can create a couple or
choose a famous couple for this article.
2. Compare/contrast Shakespeare’s Sonnet 130 to this poem by Ben Jonson
To Celia
Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss but in the cup
And I'll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove's nectar sup,
I would not change for thine.
I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much honoring thee
As giving it a hope that there
It could not wither'd be;
But thou thereon didst only breathe
And sent'st it back to me;
Since when it grows,
and smells, I swear,
Not of itself, but thee!
Ben Jonson (1573-1637)
