Good evening ladies and gentlemen. This is ______________ (student 's own name) reporting for the CBC. With only a few days until Christmas, I'm here in the Beddington Mall, finding out what Christmas really means to people. (Teenager appears at left and walks across) (Note: actors always enter from left, walk across stage to the announcer at right, then exit at right when finished speaking with the announcer. Should be carrying packages and shopping bags as if out shopping). Oh, here comes somebody now. Excuse me, young woman (man) could you tell me what Christmas means to you? Teenager: (very modern clothes and hairstyle, carrying skateboard and chewing gum loudly) Well, yeah, like, Christmas means PARTIES! Lots of parties! Having all my friends over ... ya know? By the time the parties are over, I'11 be ready for a twelve-month rest! (Exits right) (Elderly gentleman, dressed neatly; carrying cane; white hair and mustache appears at left and walks across) Announcer: Thanks and Merry Christmas! Good-day, sir. You must have seen many Christmases in your time What makes Christmas special for you? Elderly Gentleman: Well, Christmas isn't what it used to be for me, since my dear wife died, but I guess memories of Christmas are what is so special now. Memories like riding to church by horse and sleigh, taking time to visit all our friends, cutting down a tree in the woods, country school concerts with young children reciting verses and singing carols ... (Elderly gentleman exits right. Young couple dressed casually appear at left pushing a baby stroller; they cross to announcer at right.) Announcer: Good evening! What does Christmas mean to a happy family like you? Young Couple (She): Christmas means going back to Saskatchewan to see our folks, and relatives and friends from years ago. Young Couple (He): It's good for the kids, too They hardly ever see Grandma and Grandpa because it's such a long drive Young Couple (She): It may mean a lengthy trip in bad weather, but we wouldn't miss being home for Christmas! (over) Announcer: Thanks a lot. Have a good trip! (A small child enters and skips across the stage excitedly.) Hi, there! Are you excited about Christmas? (youngster nods head) What do you think is the best part about Christmas? Youngster: Presents! Announcer: What kind of presents are you hoping for? Youngster: LOTS! I want a ________________________ (He/she lists a very long list of items; youngster strolls off while the list continues. A woman enters at left and crosses to announcer at right. The woman is dressed quite plainly, carrying many parcels.) Announcer: Good evening, ma'am. We're conducting an informal survey to see what the true meaning of Christmas is to different people. Would you like to share what Christmas means to you? Woman: (Looking rather harried, glances at watch, adjusts parcels, hands are always moving) (Hesitating) Well, I guess Christmas means that I'm BUSY - baking, sending cards, shopping, wrapping presents, and cleaning the house. Yes, I'd say it means being busy, AND spending lots of money! (sighs!) (A small child enters at left and crosses the stage.) Announcer: Thanks, Ma'am, and have a very busy Christmas! (woman exits) Hi! How would you like to tell us what it is about Christmas that's put such a sparkle in your eyes? Small Child: HOLIDAYS! (spoken enthusiastically) No school for 2 whole weeks! Yeah for Christmas holidays! (A university student, carrying 2 textbooks and a binder, enters at left and crosses the stage.) Announcer: Thanks! Have a great holiday! Excuse me, young man (woman), could I have your opinion on what it is that "makes" Christmas for you? University Student: Oh, sure thing! It's my Mom's Christmas turkey with all the trimmings - mashed potatoes & gravy, dressing, cranberries. We sure don't get food like that at the university residences! Oh, and you should see the desserts! Mince pie, Christmas pudding with caramel sauce, cut-out cookies with icing and sprinkles on the top…(both begin to walk away; spotlight fades, lights come up on choir at front)…Christmas cake, shortbread, candy canes… Announcer: Well, I hope that fellow (girl) has a tasty Christmas! (An older woman enters at left and slowly crosses the stage. She has grey or white hair, and is dressed attractively.) (over) Announcer: Greetings! We're doing an informal poll on what Christmas means to people in North Calgary. Would you please let our viewers know what Christmas means to you? Older woman: (speaking slowly and eloquently) Certainly. It's watching with wonder that first snowfall of the year - that's what puts me in the Christmas spirit. It's seeing my grandchildren skating on the Bowness Lagoon and hearing their happy cries of, "Watch me, Grandma!" It's sitting around the fireplace and listening to the crackling of the fire. It's going to church on Christmas Eve and hearing once again the story of the first Christmas - when God gave us the gift of love… Announcer: Well, viewers of Calgary Nightly News, it appears that Christmas means many different things to many different people. However you spend your Christmas, I hope it's very happy. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll get in the Christmas spirit myself and join in the singing, too. (over)
