ENJOY Sushi Sushi began in the 4th Century in Southeast Asia. The fish and rice were a good source of protein. The fish were cleaned and kept in the rice to help the fish stay fresh. Later, this type of sushi was taken out of storage and then only the fish was eaten, while the rice was thrown out. Sushi later spread through China, and later to Japan. Japanese liked to eat the fish together with the rice, so this type became popular. The fish was still partly uncooked and the rice still had flavor. Later in Japan, they began mixing the rice with not only fish, but also vegetables. Today different parts of Japan use different food that grows in those areas to make all kinds of sushi. In 1923, after an earthquake, sushi spread even more through Japan. Sushi chefs lost their jobs and moved to different parts of Japan to look for work. In the 1980's sushi became more popular because more people were worried about eating healthy habits, and sushi is considered a healthy meal. Also, there are now sushi machines, which make it easier to make large amounts of the materials needed. Sushi is now known in countries all over the world. COOKIE The first cookies were actually created by accident. These "cookies" were used to test the temperature of an oven before baking a cake. Bakers used small amounts of their cake batter, which was called "koekje," which means "little cake" in Dutch. Every country has its favorite kind of cookie. In England, they enjoy shortbread cookies, in France they like sables and macaroons, while the Italians enjoy a good biscotti. Can you guess what the favorite cookie in America and Canada is? That's right…it is the Chocolate Chip Cookie! Chocolate Chip cookies were also invented by accident. At a little place in Massachusetts, America, called the Toll House Inn, Ruth Wakefield cooked food for her guests. In 1937, Ruth came up with the idea to break up a bar of chocolate that was given to her by a man named Andrew Nestle. She thought this would only make chocolate cookies, but instead they came out with chocolate chips inside. The recipe became very popular. Ruth called her cookie, the Chocolate Crunch Cookie. She then became business partner with Nestle and said he could publish her recipe on his chocolate bars as long as Ruth had enough free chocolate for her to bake cookies at the Inn. This was the beginning of a beautiful friendship, not only between Ruth and Nestle, but also between the cookie and the chocolate chip. PIZZA The Greeks first came up with the idea of baking bread in round shapes and adding different things on top of this bread. Leaves, meat, and even fruit were toppings on this bread. Greeks did not use tomatoes because it was not even discovered yet. Baker Raffeale Esposito from Naples, Italy first created pizza. He wanted to make something that was different from other breads. He first added only cheese, and then he added sauce underneath it. Esposito also made the dough into a large round pie. His creation was so famous and in 1830 a pizzeria was made in Naples so that the rest of Italy could taste his creation. Pizza spread to America, England, France, and Spain quickly after it was created in Italy. Pizza can be made with many different toppings and ingredients. It also now has many forms and shapes, like bagel pizza, thin crust, and pizza rolls. Pizza has come a long way and can be enjoyed all over the world. Falafel By: Nadav in Grade 6 Falafel's roots are in Egypt, and it was discovered around the first half of the first millennium AD. Paul Masri prepared falafel there. Falafel was made by the Copts in Egypt. It was used so they did not have to trap meat and it could be eaten on holidays when meat was forbidden. The falafel later spread to the North in Syria and Lebanon, where chickpeas were prepared. It is a popular dish throughout the Middle East, including Israel. After the emigration of Israeli Arabs to the United States and Western Europe, falafel can be found in those places as well. Falafel is traditionally served with tahini and vegetable salad, and also in a pita as a sandwich or appetizer. B'Teavon! HOPE YOU ENJOYED OUR NEWSPAPER BON APETITE
