Thesis: In Macbeth, characters are constantly trying to prove their masculinity, however, doing so is unobtainable. To begin, proving one’s manliness by doing the right thing ends in failure. Macduff tries to prove his Introductory transition manliness by going in search of Malcolm for the good of the country, which is now in tyranny at the hands of Macbeth. However, his wife interprets his actions as being unmanly and those of an uncaring husband. She states, “Wisdom! To leave his babes,/His mansion and his titles, in a place/From whence himself does fly? He loves us not (Shakespeare V.v.59-61). Lady Macduff misinterprets Macduff’s altruistic motives, thus rendering his act of manliness unsuccessful and ultimately an impossible pursuit.
