The purpose of National Honor Society shall be to create
enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to
render service, to promote leadership, and to develop
character in the students on Indianola High School.

The responsibility of earning the status of a National Honor
Society inductee is student earned. The by-laws of the society
reflect the induction criteria. Students who violate selection
criteria would be removed from the National Honor Society.

Statement about why the student is applying to
NHS and why they would make a good member.
3.5 Cumulative Unweighted Grade Point
Average.
Verification of 3 organizations or events that are
evidence of community or school service and a
narrative explanation of those experiences.
Verification of no Good Conduct Violations, out
of school suspensions, or no more than 1 inschool suspension during the student’s high
school career.
Verification that the student has shown
leadership in 2 or more clubs, activities, groups,
organizations, events, or teams in school,
community, or work place.
Verification defined-On this application, verification means that the
student certifies (by getting a signature) their involvement in the noted
activity or organization. The activity or organization sponsor, advisor,
or coach is able to sign and certify their participation.
Parent’s role-Parents and students are asked to sign this application
form before a student turns in their application. Students should take
the time and give the attention to ensure their application is complete
and accurate before turning it in to one of the NHS sponsors by the
deadline. A parent signature should ensure clarity, honesty, and
fullness of the student application so that the student fully represents
themselves as a candidate for the National Honor Society.
The Faculty Council serves an important role in selection of NHS
inductees. The responsibilities of the faculty council (comprised of 5
high school teachers) include:
 Verifying Service (narrative explanation) selection criteria on the
application
 Verifying Leadership (supplemental letters) selection criteria on
the application
 Consideration of Recognitions and Awards that students list as an
option part of the application process
 Voting (if there is a question) about a student’s induction- noting
that a majority vote is needed for student acceptance into NHS
 Providing feedback to students not selected into NHS as to what
areas they can improve upon related to service, character, and
leadership
The National Honor Society Sponsors have the general role and duties
of:
1. Communicating the selection process to students and parents.
2. Providing guidance and answering questions to ensure the
selection process is followed.
3. Planning for and carrying out the induction ceremony for new
NHS members.
4. Promoting the pillars of Scholarships, Service, Character, and
Leadership both within and outside the NHS society.

SERVICE
Examples of service organizations or events include, but are
not limited to: service corps, church groups, service trips,
mission trips, 4-H, mentoring, youth coaching, community

events that do good for others without monetary reward.
