Advanced Placement United States History
Summer Assignment 2012
Ms. Terndrup: lterndrup@ycsd.york.va.us
I. American Pageant textbook
Read chapters 1-4 in your textbook. Document your reading by generating an outline of significant
concepts, terms, people and events of each chapter. This will serve as your first test study guide. It
will count as a quiz grade.
Mandatory Format: Use the following guide for your outlines:
Chapter Title (ie: New World Beginnings)
I.
Subsection Title (ie: When Worlds Collide)
1. Turn the subsection title into a question or series of questions. (ie: What worlds
collided? What happened as a result of the colliding worlds?)
2. Give the main idea of the section. The main idea should answer the questions you
created from your subsections.
 Give a bulleted list of important ideas, people or events that support the main
idea. This should be brief. Do NOT copy sentences verbatim from the book.
DO NOT USE COMPLETE SENTENCES.
**YES, THE PURPLE PAGES COUNT
**Your outline should not be longer than the chapter!
This must be your own work and not “shared” with others, copied from the internet, or
borrowed from last year. It may be typed or handwritten. If handwritten, it must be legible.
DUE: First class back from summer vacation; SEPTEMBER 4, 2012. Late work will not be accepted.
Students will be tested on this information in a multiple choice format on September 10h or
11th depending on your schedules.
II. Outside Reading: Lies My Teacher Told Me by James Loewen
Overview: Students will read Loewen’s book and apply his themes to a wiki page that they and their
group members will develop. Your group members will be anonymous and you will be responsible for
your contributions.
Task:
1. When you pick up your textbook you will receive a log-in and password
2. Log into: http://tabbapush.pbworks.com
3. Make sure you read the wiki rules posted for you then click on “Lies My Teacher Told Me” in the
sidebar to access your summer assignment
4. Your username is coded with the topics given. At the end of your username is a number, your
number corresponds with the topic you have been assigned.
ie. AlexanderHamilton03, your group would be Anne Hutchinson who is number 3 on the list
5. By clicking on your topic you will be directed to a new wiki page. You and your group members will
be developing a wiki page for that topic using the themes that Loewen discusses in his book.
6. You will be graded on YOUR contributions. Make sure you label what you post (both written and
visual with your username)
7. Comments. You will be responsible for posting a MINIMUM of 3 substantive and original
comments on 3 other topics.
8. This grade will count as 50% of your first test. The other 50% will come from the multiple choice
test covering the content from your outlines. Lack of contributions will result in a zero.
Wiki pages MUST be finalized by Monday August 27, 2012
Comments MUST be posted by 9 pm September 3, 2011
Wiki Creation
Themes: There are several themes that Loewen discusses throughout his book. Below are examples of four
major themes and chapters in which you can see evidence of this discussion. Please keep in mind that your
reading of Loewen should not be limited to these ideas, nor are the references given the ONLY place those
themes will be found.
Theme
What It Means
Book Reference
Heroification
The portrayal of historical figures without flaw therefore reducing
human interest and empathy
Chapter 1
Social Archetype
The ideal/quintessential example of how society should be
Chapter 7
Textbook Biases
What do textbook writers choose to put in their texts? Or, more
interestingly, what did they leave out? What hidden agenda do
textbooks promote?
Enhancing or exaggerating events or people in order to make them
appear more exciting
Chapter 2
Melodrama over real drama
Chapter 6
Your Page: Your page must contain four elements. Each person may have his/her own interpretation of
number 2 and 3 so there should never be an excuse that “everything was done”. Please label your
contributions (ie: Alexander Hamilton 03: Lowen’s idea of heroification can be seen in...)
1. An overview of the “full” story of the topic assigned (this will take research OUTSIDE of your
textbook). You must link your information to the source. Do not copy and paste information. Wikipedia
MAY NOT be included. Consider other perspectives, people involved, or the impact of your topic. The
story is NEVER complete so the excuse that someone “did it all” will not be valid for not contributing.
2. Analysis: Compare your research with your textbook and apply Loewen’s themes to your findings.
3. Critical Thinking: Address how your understanding of Loewen will have an impact upon your approach to
the study of history.
4. Visuals/work cited: Include pictures, texts, maps or other primary sources. Both your visuals and
the information you use must be linked to the source from which it came. If it was from a book, give the
reference in MLA format.
