Write an introduction, at least one supporting paragraph with appropriate examples, and a conclusion. Why should students in a relatively homogeneous American school be forced to read books, stories, and poems by writers of different races? Should students in a predominantly white rural area have to read books and stories by African-American, Asian-American, or Hispanic writers? Or, should students in an urban school that is made up of mostly African-American and Hispanic students be forced to read books and stories by white writers? GRADING RUBRIC: Multiculturalism Essay GRADE Content 50% A The student answers the question in a mature and sophisticated fashion, citing specific, illustrative examples that support the response. B The student answers the question in a thorough and ageappropriate manner. The writer’s examples are adequate. C The student answers the question in a rudimentary fashion. The examples are limited. Expression 30% Sentences are varied and work together to create a fluid and readable essay. The ideas presented in the sentences are organized in a logical and cohesive manner. Grammatical and mechanical errors are minor and do not interfere with the presentation of the answer to the question. Sentences are less varied than the advanced essay but still communicate ideas effectively. The organization of ideas is successful. Sentences are rudimentary and show little variety. Organization is less successful—ideas do not flow logically from one to the next. More grammatical and mechanical errors are evident (in comparison to advanced) and begin to become a distraction to the reader. Mechanical and grammatical errors interfere with the expression of the ideas of the essay. Grammar and Mechanics 20% PAPER LENGTH: 450 – 600 words (1.5 to 2 pages) D/F The student answers the question in a simplistic manner or fails to answer the question sufficiently. Examples are inappropriate, ineffective, or invisible. Sentences are simple and/or faulty. An organizational principle is unclear. Grammatical and mechanical errors are so prevalent that the communication of the main ideas of the essay is unsuccessful.
