Prior to that, Tom served as a Technical Director for Broadcom’s Consumer Electronics Group. His primary areas of focus have been Blu-ray and HD DVD where served as the company’s delegate to both organizations. He actively participated in the development and specification of both HD disc formats for three years and has established excellent working relationships with other participating companies (Sony, Panasonic, Philips, DTS, Microsoft, Sun and others). Outside of the standards development committees, Tom has worked to establish a BRCM leadership position in blue-laser player (and recorder) markets, including close monitoring of the Chinese HD DVD developments. He was also responsible for representing Broadcom’s interests in the greater “Hollywood” and content creation community, “Studio” relationship management, and general media industry relations with a strong focus on Broadcom's business requirements. Activities also include high definition DVD-related public seminar and promotional events, participation in Broadcom Corporation industry events, conferences and tradeshows relevant to blue-laser and other BRCM business development areas. In the decade prior to Broadcom, Tom McMahon worked for a number of companies in the areas of video compression and display technology. In 2003, Tom was Chief Architect at DemoGraFX when the company was acquired by Dolby Laboratories where he became Senior Architect for Dolby Labs Research Division. Prior to DGFX, Tom was Director of Advanced Systems Architecture at Microsoft Corporation as Microsoft’s senior architect for digital media production, post, delivery, consumer platforms and display systems. He worked on WebTV, MSTV and UltimateTV, Windows Media, eHome, Xbox video and Windows OS platforms. Tom also served as Microsoft's representative to various international standards organizations and trade associations, including membership on the Montreux World Forum Council, the Board of the AAF Association, ATSC, DVB, the Joint EBU/SMPTE Task Force, SMPTE, ITU, ARIB, OpenCable, SCTE, Joint Video Team, and MPEG. In the early 1990’s, Tom was a consultant for various clients including Sony Pictures, Adobe, and Mercury Computer in the areas of computer graphics and video systems architecture. In early 1982 Tom co-founded Symbolics Graphics Division, rising to the position of Vice President and General Manager of that division and VP of R&D for the Symbolics Corporation over an eleven year period. In the late 1970s’ Tom was a MTS at Triple-I (Information International Inc.) working on high end film recording, electron beam recording, 35mm film scanning and 3D CGI projects. In the early-tomid 1970’s, Tom co-founded two successful startup companies before graduating college. Tom is currently on the Board of the Hollywood Post Alliance, the IBC Council, and is a member of MPEG, JVT, SMPTE, IEEE, and ACM Siggraph. Tom holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the California State University at Northridge where he was also an Assistant Lecturer. Tom was named a Fellow of the SMPTE in November of 2003 and holds one patent. He is married and lives in Playa del Rey, CA.
