CHARACTER LIST
Julius Caesar- A great Roman general who has recently returned to Rome as a victory in Spain. There is a
great possibility that he may soon become king. If Caesar becomes king, it would mean the end of
Rome’s republican system of government, in which the senators representing the people of Rome hold
the most power.
Brutus- A high-ranking, well-regarded Roman nobleman. Brutus is motivated by his sense of honor, and places
the good of Rome above his own personal interests or feelings. Brutus’ sense of honor is also his
weakness, as he tends to assume that all people act as fairly as he. Brutus admires Caesar and considers
him one of his closest friends.
Antony- A loyal friend of Caesar’s. He is a passionate pleasure seeker, rather than disciplined. Antony is often
compared to that of a frat boy.
Cassius- A talented and longtime acquaintance of Caesar. Cassius resents the facts that the Roman people treat
Caesar like a god.
Octavius- Caesar’s adopted son and appointed successor.
Casca- One of the conspirators. Casca is a tribune (an official elected to represent the common people of
Rome), who resents Caesar’s ambition.
3
Calphurnia- Caesar’s wife. Calphurnia is a big believer of omens associated with her nightmares. She is sterile
and therefore cannot have any children. This is important because during this time, all male
soldiers wanted a son to pass their name down to upon their death.
Portia- Brutus’ wife and the daughter of Cato, a noble Roman who took sides against Caesar. Portia is used to
being her husband’s confidant, so she is upset when he suddenly refuses to speak his mind.
Flavius & Murellus- Two tribunes who condemn the Plebians for their fickleness in cheering Caesar when
they had previously cheered for Caesar’s enemy, Pompeii.
Cicero- A Roman senator.
Lepidus- The third member of Antony and Octavius’ coalition. Although Antony has a low opinion of Lepidus,
Octavius trusts Lepidus’s loyalty.
Decius- A member of the conspiracy.

PERFECT 10 DIRECTIONS
For this unit we will be using the Perfect 10. The perfect 10 is composed of a bunch of squares
containing mini-projects, each with a specific value. The students will be randomly asked to select a
project periodically throughout the unit to complete. This allows students to complete mini- projects of
their choice as they read the text, and is a break from the traditional answering of review questions. In an
effort to “complete” the task, students must complete enough projects to achieve the passing score of a
10. Projects are to be completed one at a time and ONLY when assigned by the teacher. Additionally, on
the date they are due, each individual project will be collected and scored by the teacher. Students will be
given 2 days from the date of assignment to complete each task.
These are independent projects; therefore, while students are encouraged to approach teachers
with any questions, the teachers cannot assist you in the completion of them.
Other important facts to note:

If projects are not handed in the day they are due, you do not receive the points. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Anyone who is absent on the day they are due must hand them in immediately upon their return
or it will result in the grade of a zero.

The writing portions of each project must be TYPED. This must be done in size 12, Times New
Roman font, and with a 1” margin. You are receiving 2 days for each project for this reason. NO
EXCEPTIONS. In the event that your printer does not work, you may submit the writing portions of
each project electronically to either ____________________@spboe.org or ____________________@spboe.org.

After each mini-project you complete you must get the signature of a teacher in that box before
crossing it out. Also, you must hold on to each graded project as proof of completion and for credit.

SOLILQUY
A dramatic speech or monologue delivered in a play, in which a character talks to him or herself
and reveals their thoughts or feelings aloud.______ ____________________________________________
(Act 2, Scene I)
BRUTUS: The only way is to kill Caesar. I have no personal reason to strike at him—
only the best interest of the people. He wants to be crowned. The question is, how
would being king change him? Evil can come from good, just as poisonous snakes tend
to come out into the open on bright sunny days—which means we have to walk
carefully. If we crown him, I have to admit we’d be giving him the power to do
damage.
Rulers abuse their power when they separate it from compassion. To be honest, I’ve
never known Caesar to let his emotions get the better of his reason. But everyone
knows that an ambitious young man uses humility to advance himself, but when he
reaches the top, he turns his back on his supporters and reaches for the skies while
scorning those who helped him get where he is. Caesar might act like that. Therefore,
in case he does, we must hold him back. And since our quarrel is with his future
behavior, not what he does now, I must frame the argument like this: if his position is
furthered, his character will fulfill these predictions. And therefore we should liken
him to a serpent’s egg—once it has hatched, it becomes dangerous, like all serpents.
Thus we must kill him while he’s still in the shell…
