Dear Parents and Guardians, March 2, 2015 With financial assistance from PTSO and student council, we are pleased to announce that the seventh grade will be taking a grade level, educational field trip in June to the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills by charter bus. This is a wonderful opportunity to extend our seventh grade curriculum since the Holocaust is addressed in ELA. To find out more information about the actual museum, you can visit their website (http://www.holocaustcenter.org). The students will receive a guided tour through the museum, and will get a chance to speak with a Holocaust survivor and listen to their story and experience. Note: The museum asks for no cameras or phones to be used inside the museum to respect the privacy of the Holocaust survivors. During the third trimester, we will read the memoir I Have Lived a Thousand Years by Livia Bitton-Jackson It is the author’s story of when she was a 13 year old Jewish girl trying to survive in Hungary with her family while the Nazis invade during 1944. Beyond reading this novel, we will spend some time researching and reading articles to get a better understanding of the Holocaust. Many of our articles come from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum website for students (www.ushmm.org). As the unit closes, students have an opportunity to reflect and write about their understanding of the Holocaust. Date of field trip: Tuesday, June 2nd -Students must bring a lunch and a drink with their name written on both -Students may bring a simple snack to eat on the bus on the way back home (put in lunch bag) 7:30 AM – students will load charter buses in back of school (will not attend advisory) 7:45 AM – buses depart to museum 10:00 AM – lunch before the tour 1:45 PM – buses depart to GLMS 4:00 PM – arrive back at GLMS (students will need own transportation home) Permission slip and $25 (cash or check) must be turned in together by Monday, March 30, 2015. *Checks can be made out to GLMS with your son or daughter’s name in the memo area. We will need parent chaperones, first come, first serve basis. If you are interested, then please fill out the chaperone part of the permission slip. Communication will mostly be done by email. Majority of parents will be expected to ride the charter bus with the group. At this time we are collecting the student cost for the trip, which includes the bus fare and the museum fee. The cost of the trip has to be paid for in advance. Students need to turn in payment WITH permission note to their ELA teacher by March 30. We will present the museum with a donation check. If you would like to add any money towards this donation, then please note the donation amount. You will receive a receipt for this donation. As we get closer to the actual field trip, we will be sending home reminder notes. Thank you!
