Vocabulary: Dividend → the number that is being split into groups in the division problem Divisor → the number being divided into the divisor Quotient → the answer to a division problem Compatible number → numbers that are easy to calculate mentally How to use compatible numbers to estimate in division: Step 1 → Look at the first one or two digits in the dividend. Ask yourself: What is the closest number that forms a basic fact with the divisor? Example: 78 ÷ 4 Think: 7 ÷ 4 is close to 8 ÷ 4 Step 2 → Round the dividend so that it uses the basic fact. The rounded numbers are called compatible numbers. Example: 78 ÷ 4 is close to 80 ÷ 4 Step 3 → Use mental math to help you divide. Example: 80 ÷ 4 = 20 (8 ÷ 4 = 2 and bring the zero(s) over if you are dividing by a single digit. Example #2: 247 ÷ 5 Think: 24 ÷ 5 is close to 25 ÷ 5 so 247 ÷ 5 is close to 250 ÷ 5 250 ÷ 5 = 50
