Examples: Writing really large are small numbers can be tedious in standard notation (all those zeros)! We can use scientific notation to write these numbers in a mathematical shorthand using exponents.
US Public Debt as of Black Friday is over:
$18,000,000,000,000 $1.8 x 1013
Distance of the sun from Earth
Scientific Notation
A positive number is written in scientific notation if it is written as the product of a number a, where 1 ≤ a < 10 and an integer power r of 10.
a x 10r

Which of the following is written in scientific notation?
Writing a Number in Scientific Notation
a. 26.75 x 105
b. 3.2 x 103
c. 0.45 x 103
d. 10,200,000
e. 2.3 x 105
f. 0.05 x 108
Step 1: Move the decimal point in the original number until the new number has a value between 1 and 10.
Step 2: count the number of decimal places the decimal point was moved in Step 1. If the original number is 10 or greater, the count is positive. If the original number is less than 1, the count is negative.
Step 3: Write the product of the new number in Step 1 by 10 raised to an exponent equal to the count found in Step 2.

Write each number in scientific notation.
a. 1,760,000
b. 0.00028
We can also write numbers in scientific notation in standard notation by reversing the process.
Move the decimal point in the number the same number of places as the exponent on 10. c. 0.00000000975
d. 23,560,000,000
If the exponent is positive, move to the right. If the exponent is negative move to the left.
