Grade 5 Mathematics
SCS Detailed Curriculum Map 6
2012 - 2013
Focus: Decimals (Supporting Topics: Fractions/Percents)
Investigations Unit__6__ and Supplemental Materials
SOL 5.1, 5.2, 5.4, 5.5a - See Curriculum Framework for Details
Big Ideas
Equivalence: the numbers in different place-value positions are related by powers of ten
Multiplication and division by ten make the whole shift to the right and to the left in a decimal
representation
If the whole is shifted, one can work with decimals using whole-number arithmetic
Decimals represent part of an area
Anchor Experience
Fosnot (Place Value, Rounding, Comparing/Ordering)
The Mystery of the Meter - Day 1 ONLY
Day 1 focuses primarily on the place value of decimals (tens through thousandths), but this lesson
provides an excellent opportunity to introduce the notions of rounding and ordering as the students
begin to understand how the dials move. Using this activity as an introduction provides an
interesting contextual background for further investigation of decimals.
