10 SHARE FASTEST F-T WORKOUT TIME
By Ron Mitchell
P
rospective buyers got a good look at the individuals cataloged in the March 2 Fasig-Tipton
Florida sale of 2-year-olds in training at Gulfstream
Park.
Although none of the horses broke the stopwatch when the under tack show workouts were
conducted Feb. 29, sale veterans said it's not about
the time, it's about how they did it.
With the exception of two turf works, one work
at a quarter-mile, and gallops by Adena Springs'
horses, all others breezed an eighth of a mile. With
10 individuals sharing the day's fastest time of :10
for the distance, none had a distinct advantage
over another.
"Some worked fast, but not all were within
themselves," said consignor Niall Brennan of the
various works he observed during the day. "Some
that worked in :10 2/5 looked very good because
they had balance and rhythm on the gallop out."
The under tack show was fairly routine although
one horse broke loose before it worked. BH

Her last start came in the $1 million Belmont

"Chad said she went really easy and cooled out

rom Fasig-Tipton president and CEO Boyd
Browning Jr., who said there are "quality
horses from start to finish," to buyers and
consignors, there is unanimity that offerings
at the March 2 Fasig-Tipton Florida sale of
2-year-olds in training at Gulfstream Park are
top of the line.
A number of factors—the Feb. 29 under
tack workouts, pedigree, and previous sales
prices for those being pinhooked—can help
sort them out to whatever extent possible.
Not surprisingly, one horse on everyone's
list is Hip 131, a Tapit colt out of Bethan
(Giant's Causeway), a half sister to grade I
winner and sire Hard Spun. The colt was a
$1.2 million RNA at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale.
Another good-looker from Keeneland September is Hip 153, a Curlin filly purchased for
$975,000 out of the Lane's End consignment.
She descends from the same female family
as grade I winner Hot Dixie Chick.
J.J. Crupi, a pinhooker whose Crupi's New
Castle Farm was leading consignor last year,
is bullish on his entire group—particularly
Hip 104, a Malibu Moon filly from the family
of Will Take Charge bought for $500,000 from
last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select sale.
Crupi also likes Hip 60, an Uncle Mo filly
produced from a Bernardini half sister to
grade II winner Songster bought at last
year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale for
$200,000 after previously being an RNA at
Keeneland as a $135,000 weanling.
Hip 6, a Medaglia d'Oro colt from Ciaran
Dunne's Wavertree, descends from the family of Fusaichi Pegasus and was bought as a
weanling for $300,000 before being bought
back for $445,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga.

Secure Investment's War Front colt (Hip

Hip 130, another Tapit colt from Eddie

NEW YORK APPROVES STANOZOLOL BAN

he New York State Gaming Commission Feb.
29 approved a regulation banning stanozolol,
an anabolic steroid that doesn't occur naturally
in racehorses but has been permitted at specific
threshold levels.
New York racing rules governing anabolic steroids allow for the presence of three endogenous
steroids—those that occur naturally in a horse—at
specific levels under national model rules. In New
York, stanozolol has been the last steroid permitted at certain levels "that is neither endogenous
to a horse nor already banned by the commission," the NYSGC said.
The ban won't take effect for six months in
order to give additional time for stanozolol to
work its way out of those horses that were legally
administered the substance prior to Feb. 29. The
move to ban stanozolol began last year.
Under the new regulation stanozolol, an anabolic steroid, will be
banned after a six-month withdrawal period
"There is no valid reason to administer this
substance to a healthy racehorse, and there are
better alternatives that are permitted for horses
that are sick or injured," according to the NYSGC
analysis of the rule that was printed in late December in the New York State Register. BH

The bill is tied to a $3 billion state compact with the Seminole tribe, which operates
seven casinos in Florida. It allows Quarter

This was certainly the case for

RACING
COMMENTARY

A TOUCH OF GREY
of killer whales from their California location

will soon find out whether a circus without elephants is still a circus.
Racing does not have the option of finding
out whether racing without horses is still racing.
This is why we so adamantly support medication
reform and great efforts by concerned individuals—such as the recent claim and retirement
of Populist Politics, a 7-year-old winner of more
than $653,000, who won his swan song last
week while running for a $4,000 tag.
This past weekend we found Juan hobbling
on a badly injured foot. Some canned food
helped coax him into a cat carrier. At our local
animal hospital the gentle veterinarian treated
the injured foot while her technician comforted
a surprisingly docile Juan, who weighed in at
10 pounds and—his foot aside—was deemed a
perfectly healthy 2-year-old spayed female.
The patient is making progress while being
temporarily confined to a large and lushly appointed canine kennel. Please join me in saying
"bienvenido, Juanita", to the easy life of a pampered house cat. BH

he cat showed up on the front porch of our
Hudson Valley farmhouse back in November, just as the season's threats of cold weather
started turning into promises. He was young
and scrawny; his dull coat a swirling blend of
grey. When he spoke, his plaintive "meow" said,
"feed me."
On closer inspection—as close as our trepidatious new neighbor would allow anyway—he
showed the surgically clipped left ear of a feral
cat that had been caught, vaccinated, neutered,
and released back into the wild. As winter settled in, his front porch feeding grounds were
soon tricked out with a freeze-proof water bowl
and a double-door cat house, complete with a
heated bed activated by the weight of a sleepy
feline.
Owing to his pretty color and my wife's high
regard for the work of Jose Victoriano Gonzalez-Perez, we named him "Juan Gris" as tribute
to the popular name of the great Spanish modernist painter.
Right about now you're probably wondering
what a scrawny stray with a fancy
name has to do with Thoroughbred
racing. As a provider of racing commentary, I have not been shy about
"talking the talk" when it comes to
the ethical treatment of Thoroughbred racehorses. In his small way
Juan Gris was also providing me the
opportunity to walk an extremely
modest walk.
The ethical treatment of working
animals remains a contentious subject. Few controversies in New York
City generate heat like that sparked
by Central Park's carriage horses
having to clip-clop home through
snarling Westside traffic. Sea World
