Fraction Bingo Lesson Plan for 4th grade Standards: Mathematics: 4.NF.1 Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n × a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions. Objectives: Students will convert fractions in order to mark the spaces on their bingo card. Assessment: If a student gets a bingo they show that they understand how to change improper fractions in to mixed numbers and vice versa. Advanced Preparations: Create blank bingo cards Create list of fractions that can be used to fill in the bingo card Lesson: 1. Review with the students how to get from a mixed number to an improper fraction and from an improper fraction to a mixed number. Do a few practice problems to see that students understand both processes. 2. Pass out a blank bingo card to each student. 3. Display on an overhead or document camera the factions that they can use to fill in the spaces on their card. 4. Allow three minutes to fill in their card. 5. Inform students that the numbers that are on their cards are not going to be the numbers that you call out. Instead you are going to call out either a mixed number or improper fraction and the students must use scrap paper or a dry erase board to figure out the answer and then mark it off on their card. 6. Play game with students for an allotted amount of time or until a designated number of students get a bingo. 7. If the teacher chooses there may be a small prize for those who get a bingo.
