Vocabulary Fractions key words:
Denominator- The number on the bottom of the fraction
Numerator – the number on the top of the fraction
Proper fraction – when the number on top is SMALLER than the number on bottom
Improper fraction – when the number on top is GREATER than the number on bottom
Equivalent fractions – Two (or more) fractions that represent the same part of a whole
(or group) but use different numbers to do so.
Multiples: The product of the number in question and another number.
Like, “What are the multiples of 2?” The answer of 2 x every number…
2 x 2 = 4 so 4 is a MULTIPLE of 2. 2 x 100 = 200 so 200 is a MULTIPLE of 2.
Multiples of 2 = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18…….
Lowest Common multiple: The lowest multiple that two (or more) fractions share.
Example: 4 and 5… their lowest common multiple is 20.
Multiples of 4 = 4, 8, 16, 20, 24, 28…
Multiples of 5= 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30…..
Factors: The factors or 8 are 1,2,4,8 BECAUSE when we divide 8 by 1 we get a whole
number (no remainder). If a number will not divide “easily” it is not a factor.
Lowest common denominator: The lowest multiple the denominators (numbers on the
bottom of fractions) share.
