To convert a Decimal to Fraction, follow these steps:
Convert 0.75 into fraction
Step 1: Write down or think of 0.75 in words:
0.75 = seventy five hundredths
Step 2: Focus on the last decimal place value, which is hundredths.
This would be your denominator and could be written as: ___
100
Then seventy-five would be the numerator.
Therefore as a fraction, it would be written as:
75
100
Step 3: Simplify the fraction (this took me two steps):
÷5
75
100
=
÷5
÷5
15
20
=
÷5
Answer = 3/4

To convert a Fraction to Decimal, follow these steps:
Step 1: Find a number you can multiply by denominator to make it 10, or 100, or 1000, or
any number followed by 0s.
Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by that number. (Equivalent Fraction)
Step 3. Lastly, divide the numerator with the denominator. Your denominator would give you a
clue on the last decimal place value.
Example 1: Express 2/5 as a Decimal
Step 1: We can multiply 5 by
2 to become 10
Step 2: Multiply top and bottom by 2:
×2
2
5
4
=
10
×2
Step 3: 4 ÷ 10 = .4 (move one decimal places to the left)
Since the denominator is 10 you knew the answer would be 4 tenths
or simply 0.4
Answer = 0.4
What if we can’t think of a number to multiply to make
the denominator 10, 100, 1000 etc.?
Example 2: Convert 3/8 to Decimal
Step 1: We have to divide:
3
8
=3÷ 8
Step 2: Use long division
Answer = 0.375
Hint: If the fraction is a proper fraction the answer MUST
always be less than 1.
3/8 (proper fraction) = 0.375 (less than 1)
Common Mistake:
Example 2: Convert 3/8 to Decimal
Step 1: We have to divide:
3
=3÷ 8
8
Step 2: Use long division
Notice the error in long division:
3
≠8÷3
8
Be very careful on your long division and always remember that:
If it is a proper fraction the answer is less than 1
