Number Concepts, Numbersense and Numeracy:
A Common Core Approach to Reach All Learners
March 5, 2014
8:30 AM – 3:00 PM
Presented by: Professor Mahesh Sharma
COURSE DESCRIPTION: As we expect all children to read fluently with comprehension by the end of the third grade, we should expect all children to have mastery of numeracy by the end of fourth grade so that they can learn mathematics easily, effectively, and efficiently. In the early grades, the Common Core State Standards rightly concentrate on arithmetic (number concept, numbersense, numeracy skills) along with the components of spatial orientation/space organization, and measurements that manifest and support it. The aim of this workshop is to develop the concept of number, numbersense, and numeracy through the integration of quantitative and spatial reasoning. Numeracy means a child’s ability to execute the four whole number arithmetic operations correctly, consistently, fluently, in standard/efficient forms and with understanding. They may begin with ideocentric methods and explorations of number operations, but ultimately they are able to understand others’ approaches to arithmetic operations and become fluent in standards algorithms that are the distillation of centuries of effort by different cultures. This is achieved when instruction emphasizes the concepts underlying arithmetic, the skills of arithmetic computation, and the ability to apply arithmetic to solve problems. Putting arithmetic to engaging uses develops numeracy and, importantly, captures a child’s interest.
