English and Film Studies Percentage to Letter Grade Conversions *This applies to English and Film Studies ONLY* While the University of Alberta now uses the four point alpha-numeric grading system, some instructors continue to use percentages on items of term work before assigning letter grades (e.g., those assignments with multiple components). While the University does not prohibit the use of percentage marking, and indeed allows that some instructors may continue to do so, it also has elected not to provide a conversion table that includes percentage equivalents. In order to standardize marking practices in the department, we would strongly encourage all instructors who have chosen to continue marking some student work in percentages to follow the conversion table as outlined below. Please note, University of Alberta policies require that instructors include on their course outlines “the manner in which the official University grading system is to be implemented in that particular course or section” (Calendar 23.4.8). If you elect to mark some of your students’ work in percentages, be sure that you include the following conversion table in your course outline. However, do not simply paste it into your syllabus without outlining which portions of the marking will be done using this percentage conversion scale. All final assignment results are to be reported to the student using a letter grade or grade point value. Percentage 90-100 86-89 82-85 78-81 74-77 70-73 66-69 62-65 58-61 54-57 50-53 0-49 Letter Grade A+ A AB+ B BC+ C CD+ D F Grade Point Value 4.0 4.0 3.7 3.3 3.0 2.7 2.3 2.0 1.7 1.3 1.0 0.0
