A Game of Fraction, Decimal, Percent
Equivalency!
Fractional Spoons Directions
Materials: Deck of Spoons playing cards—copies on the next pages
Spoons (one less than the number of people playing)
Objective: Get four cards of equivalent fraction, decimal, percent, visual percent.
Once you have all four equivalent fractions, quietly take a spoon. End each round
with the possession of a spoon. Watch all players very carefully! The player
without a spoon looses the round.
Directions: Divide students into small groups (Make certain you have at least 1
spoon for each student, less one, and 1 deck of Spoons cards for each group).
Have players sit in a circle, with the spoons laying in the middle, so all players can
reach them. After the cards are shuffled, the dealer deals out 4 cards to each
player. The remaining cards are laid down near the dealer and become the draw
pile. Moving in a clockwise direction, the dealer draws a card from the draw pile
and play begins. If he/she wants to keep that drawn card, he/she must take 1
card from his/her hand and discard to the player to the left. Play moves to the
person on his/her left. That player can either pick up the discarded card from
the player to the right and take 1 card from their hand to discard to the player to
the left, keeping 4 cards in their hand, or pass the discarded card on to the
player to his/her left. He/she must discard one card, making certain to only have
4 cards in his/her possession at any one time during this game. Cards quickly keep
passing from the dealer to the player to the left and their player to the left until
someone has four equivalent fractions. Once a player has 4 equivalent fraction
cards, he/she takes a spoon from the middle of the circle. All players immediately follow by taking a spoon, much like sitting in a chair in the game Musical
Chairs. The player then lays his/her 4 cards down for all players to check. Shuffle the cards, change dealers and start again. This game is fast paced and meant
for quick recall those benchmark fractions with their equivalent decimals and percents.
