Some Contact Info for Career Assignment
This document is meant to be helpful, but not exhaustive. You can find information
about many academic, private, and government institutions on the internet. Bring up
your browser, choose a Search engine, and type in the name of profession.
COMMERCIAL BIOTECH FIRMS
A listing for biotech companies in the greater Los Angeles and Orange County
areas can be found at
http://www.biopharmguy.com/scalifornia.php
Be sure to ask the company or lab whether it uses any nucleic acid based techniques.
Also, the list of interesting www sites on the class website provides links that may be
useful.
BIOINFORMATICS
Check the SoCalBSI webpage for internship sites for our summer program.
http://instructional1.calstatela.edu/jmomand2/
Look under SoCalBSI programs in the right column on the homepage. Click on a year
and from the page you reach, click on the “Mentors” tab in the gold stripe under the
picture of the university Student Union. These sites are labs that use bioinformatics to
answer molecular questions. Several of them are nucleic acid-related.
FORENSICS
There are DNA labs in the LA Police Department, as well as the LA, San Bernardino,
and Orange County Steriff's Departments. Contact information for forensic labs can be
found at the website for the California Association of Criminalistics.
The homepage URL is http://www.cacnews.org/
and from that page, under “Contact,” there is a directory link.
You will need to determine whether or not there is a DNA lab, and may need to
request additional contact information from the first number you call. In addition to DNA,
other common terms that may get you to a DNA lab are Forensic Biology, or the term
"biology".
