Anne Salomon’s Thesis Chapters Based on data from the GEM Bidarki Project 030647 The following thesis chapters will be written as publishable journal manuscripts and represent three out of 4 components of a GEM Final Report, due April 15th 2006. One of these 4 components, the TEK final report prepared by Anne Salomon and Henry Hungtington) has been submitted (April 27th, 2005). The following manuscripts will be submitted to GEM as they are completed. A final GEM report composed of these three manuscripts and the submitted TEK report will be compiled by Anne Salomon and submitted to GEM by April 15th, 2006. I) Investigating the relative roles of natural factors and shoreline harvest in altering intertidal community dynamics & diversity Data Presented: biological survey data of predators (human harvest patterns, sea otter & sea bird distribution), prey (K. tunicata, algal and invert diversity, kelp biomass) and abiotic data (wave force, temperature) Proposed Analyses: MDS ordination of community data, multiple regression, model selection via AIC/BIA, or path analysis Target Journal: Ecological Applications II) Ecological consequences of shoreline harvest on Alaska’s rocky shores Data Presented: small scale experimental removals of K. tunicata at 6 sites with varying ambient densities of K. tunicate. Proposed Analyses: ANOVA of various response variables, primary production, biodiversity, other grazer biomass Target Journal: Ecology III) Synergistic serial depletion leads to the localized decline of a keystone grazer and the alteration of a coastal ecosystem Data Presented: Traditional ecological knowledge, village survey data, ADF&G time series of shellfish landings, reference ecology papers above Proposed Analyses: T-tests of village survey data Target Journal: Ecology Letters
