Short-Term Program Classes Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired 2012-2013 Short-Term Classes are designed for academic level students who are functioning at or close to grade level. There is no cost to districts or families. Classes fill early, so we encourage you to sign up several months ahead. Please go to our website for specific information about the classes and how to apply. Monday-to-Friday Classes. Highly intensive classes focus on adaptive skills needed by visually impaired learners to access the regular curriculum. Typical ratios are a teacher and TA with a group of two or three students working on similar objectives. Students’ local teachers select their student’s objectives through discussion with TSBVI teachers. Popular topics are technology (Windows commands, Internet, external devices, notetakers, screen readers, scan-read software, MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel), maximizing use of low vision (strategies and optimal use of devices), tactile graphics, math or science tools and concepts. Students in all classes also receive training in social and independent living skills after school on the dorm. They also complete certain homework brought from home. NEW: Elementary Technology and Math Series: “Tech for Tykes” or “Math for Munchkins.” Students in grades 2-3 attend a series of three 3-day fall classes at TSBVI to learn either basic technology skills or compensatory math skills. Local TVIs and TSBVI work together between sessions to assure continuity of learning. Accepted students must commit to attend all three sections of the class. No exceptions!! Extended Weekend Classes. Classes focus on skills needed by visually impaired learners which may be difficult to address in the regular academic day. Topics include: use of low vision tools and strategies, college prep, mobility, independent living skills, recreation and leisure skills, personal and interpersonal growth, self-advocacy, outdoor adventure, the school prom. The ability to learn alongside other visually impaired students and adults can be a life changing opportunity that enhances self-esteem and leads to greater motivation in approaching life’s personal and academic challenges. Referrals to Short-Term Program classes must come from the local school district. Students may attend more than one class. Parents can learn more by contacting their child’s local teacher of the visually impaired, or by calling the principal of the TSBVI Short-Term Programs (see contact information below).
