JOB SPECIFICATION
1.
Summary of the broad purpose of the position in relation to the organisation's goals (its expected
outcome and how it is achieved).





The Renal Transplant Surgeon contributes to the provision of advanced clinical services to patients across
AHS
Contributes to teaching/training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
Promotes and participates in research, related to renal transplant activities across AHS
Promotes and participates surgical audit, including mortality/morbidity review
Reporting/Working Relationships (to whom the person reports, staff for whom the person is
responsible, and other significant connections and working relationships within the organisation).





The incumbent reports to the Medical Co-Directors, CNARTS
Responsible for supervision of resident Medical Officers, Registrars and in conjunction with fellow Renal
Transplant Surgeons
Liaises with other staff of Divisions and Services of AHS
Liaises closely with other surgical units on surgical audit and mortality/morbidity
The incumbent is professionally accountable to the Co-Directors Central Northern Adelaide Renal and
Transplantation Service (CNARTS)

Although based at The Royal Adelaide Hospital, the incumbent will be required to work in any site of the
Adelaide Health Service.
You may be required to undergo a criminal history check.
Must be prepared to attend relevant meetings and staff development/education activities as required
A formal performance appraisal will be conducted annually
Some out of hours work will be required including public holidays and weekend duties

The Renal Transplant Surgeon participates and contributes to the management of renal transplant patients
by:
 Providing clinical leadership to facilitate and support a team approach to the provision of clinical services
 Undertaking the management and assuming responsibility for patients admitted for Renal Transplant
 Supervising junior medical staff and trainees in the care of these patients
 Being available to medical colleagues for consultation regarding patient care
 Developing and implementing protocols in conjunction with other staff as appropriate
 Documenting patient care accurately and objectively
 Writing with the knowledge that the patients have a right to inspect their casenotes under Freedom of
Information legislation
 Ensuring content of the casenotes is concise, relevant and structured and using approved abbreviations only.
Each having a date and time and the writer being clearly identified both by a signature, a printed name and a
position description
 Participating in relevant multidisciplinary meetings
 Fostering the development of community networks appropriate to the unit’s work
Contribute to teaching/training by:
 Participating in medical teaching/training programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
 Providing appraisals of medical undergraduates and trainee medical officers assigned to the unit
 Participating in the training of other health professionals
Contribute to the efficient management of the clinical and material resources of the Unit by:
 Using facilities, equipment and supplies in the most cost efficient manner
 Contributing to management by ensuring that appropriate practices are in place to ensure the timely coding
of required data
Contribute to a patient focused approach in the provision of clinical care by:
 Adhering to and supporting practices that ensure patients’ rights are respected
 Investigating and addressing patient complaints in a positive, constructive manner
 Maximising the participation of consumers in planning and evaluating services
Contribute to the adoption of responsive risk management practices by:
 Maintaining an awareness of risk in the clinical environment
 Actively supporting and contributing to risk management activities
 Reporting sentinel events, potential medical negligence claims and adverse patient incidents
Ensure that continuous quality improvement programs and activities are in place and are linked to the
organisations strategic and corporate directions and targets by:
 Establishing an effective process of surgical audit within CNARTS
 Initiating and supporting clinical improvement activities including evaluation of clinical processes and
service outcomes, identifying possible areas for improvement and implementation of required changes
 Reviewing morbidity and mortality data to ensure that surgical standards within CNARTS meet established
benchmarks

Assisting with the developing and establishing key performance indicators for all critical activities relevant
to area of responsibility in accordance with the quality evaluation program.
Assisting in the identification, establishment and review of corporate and departmental performance
standards and outcomes (note: wherever possible management systems for WorkCover, EQuIP and internal
management should be integrated).
Contribute to the promotion and implementation of the General Public Sector Management Aims, personnel

EDUCATION:


Appropriate Specialist Qualifications for Renal Transplant Surgeon/Senior Renal Transplant Surgeon (Renal
Transplant)
Registrable as a Specialist with the Medical Board of South Australia (Renal Transplant)
PERSONAL ABILITIES/APTITUDE/SKILLS:







A high level of clinical skills in Renal Transplant
Demonstrated excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment
Demonstrated teaching skills, ability to organise and deliver education programs for medical officers, trainee
medical officers, nursing staff and undergraduate medical students
Ability to supervise staff
Ability to relate well to other medical practitioners, health professionals, patients, their relatives and the
public
Research skills, clinical or basic, as evidenced by recent publications/presentations
EXPERIENCE:





Experience in quality improvement activities
Experience within a large teaching hospital
Experience at a senior level of professional practice
Experience in teaching and undergraduate and postgraduate level
Experience in research initiatives.
KNOWLEDGE:







Understanding of quality improvement principles
Understanding of the rights and responsibilities of patients and their families
