EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Soil and Greenhouse Gas Technicians Qualifications: Enrolled in Agroecology, Agronomy, Engineering, Environment, Physical Geography, or Soil Science. Preference given to those in senior years with excellent academic achievement or field/farm experience. Drivers license necessary. Duties and responsibilities: The student will be responsible for assisting graduate students and Senior Technicians in soil and plant sampling, and conducting greenhouse gas flux measurements. Laboratory duties include preparation of gas storage vials, soil grinding and extraction, plant grinding and plant threshing. Individuals will report daily to a Senior Greenhouse Gas and Field Technician. Skills and benefits to be gained from this position: Skills learned include: methods for analysis of various gases, determination of greenhouse gas fluxes using chambers, soil sampling, plant sampling, nutrient extraction from soil, trouble shooting techniques and working in teams. Interviews: Expected to commence mid-February Project: Development of Greenhouse Gas Neutral Agricultural Systems The student is to work under the supervision of graduate students, Senior Technicians and Research Associates to conduct soil and plant sampling, and measurements of greenhouse gas fluxes. The student will work on several projects al examining best management practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, N2O, and CH4) from soil. The projects include fertilizer formulations to reduce emissions of N2O, role of perennials in storing carbon and preventing N2O emissions, timing and placement effects of fertilizer addition, and role of irrigation in emissions.
