Programme Description
1 a. What particular specialty learning opportunities has this programme provided e.g. sub-specialty exposure,
especially those which are not available elsewhere?
This programme provides specialty learning opportunities in every sub specialty of Psychiatry including
opportunities in perinatal, inpatient adolescent, inpatient forensic and academic Psychiatry which may not be
available in other Deaneries.
b. How did you and other trainees access these opportunities?
These opportunities can be accessed via discussion with Educational Supervisor and Training Programme
Director who encourage trainees to pursue particular areas of interest for learning.
2 a. What opportunities are there for research, audit and teaching?
This programme provides numerous opportunities for involvement with audit, research and
teaching with each trainee encouraged to participate in audit projects and teaching in every six
month rotational placement. Educational Supervisors are extremely supportive in providing both
time and supervisory assistance with these areas.
b. How do trainees access these opportunities?
These opportunities can be accessed by discussion with Educational Supervisor, local area College Tutor and
Training Programme Director who will be happy to assist trainees both in accessing these opportunities and
fulfilling them.
3 a. How are rotations are hospital sites organised?
Rotations are organised via sub specialty and hospital site with most trainees completing at least six months

unique to this post or a key feature in the West?
The West of Scotland runs a day release course in Psychiatry, which takes place every Thursday at Erskine
Hospital. This provides trainees with both lecture based teaching and clinical practice time aimed both at
preparing trainees for exams and improving clinical knowledge and skills for trainee development.
In addition each hospital runs an internal teaching programme with trainees given the opportunity to present
cases, journals and audit with view to continuing professional development.
5. What can trainees expect of their trainers in this post?
West of Scotland trainers in Psychiatry are exceptionally enthusiastic in providing trainees with the learning

number of Psychiatric sub-specialties and patient populations with excellent educational supervision and
