What particular specialty learning opportunities has this programme provided e.g. sub-specialty exposure, especially those which are not available elsewhere? This programme provides specialty learning opportunities in every sub specialty of Psychiatry including opportunities in perinatal, inpatient adolescent, inpatient forensic and academic Psychiatry which may not be available in other Deaneries. b. How did you and other trainees access these opportunities? These opportunities can be accessed via discussion with Educational Supervisor and Training Programme Director who encourage trainees to pursue particular areas of interest for learning. 2 a. What opportunities are there for research, audit and teaching? This programme provides numerous opportunities for involvement with audit, research and teaching with each trainee encouraged to participate in audit projects and teaching in every six month rotational placement. Educational Supervisors are extremely supportive in providing both time and supervisory assistance with these areas. b. How do trainees access these opportunities? These opportunities can be accessed by discussion with Educational Supervisor, local area College Tutor and Training Programme Director who will be happy to assist trainees both in accessing these opportunities and fulfilling them. 3 a. How are rotations are hospital sites organised? Rotations are organised via sub specialty and hospital site with most trainees completing at least six months general Psychiatry within their first year. Subsequent rotations will be organised depending on trainee preference and learning requirements. Rotations are discussed with the Training Programme Director both at the entry to programme and on an annual basis thereafter. b. Which hospitals are involved? What degree of choice is there for trainees? Trainees will have the opportunity to discuss choice of placement with the Training Programme Director with decisions on placements based on a variety of factors including trainee preference and learning requirements. 4. What teaching (e.g. day-release or exam preparation) or learning opportunities (e.g. e-learning, OOPE), are unique to this post or a key feature in the West? The West of Scotland runs a day release course in Psychiatry, which takes place every Thursday at Erskine Hospital. This provides trainees with both lecture based teaching and clinical practice time aimed both at preparing trainees for exams and improving clinical knowledge and skills for trainee development. In addition each hospital runs an internal teaching programme with trainees given the opportunity to present cases, journals and audit with view to continuing professional development. 5. What can trainees expect of their trainers in this post? West of Scotland trainers in Psychiatry are exceptionally enthusiastic in providing trainees with the learning opportunities they require and the support to fulfill them. Trainees will have weekly supervision time with their Educational Supervisor, which provides an excellent opportunity to discuss a wide range of topics including clinical problems, educational objectives and other areas of concern, or indeed interest for the trainee. 6. What are key markers of success? (e.g. exam pass rates. MD, PhD, papers) Key markers of progress and success include the yearly ARCP process and Royal College of Psychiatry exams. 7. West of Scotland Specialty training in Psychiatry provides trainees the opportunity to work and learn within an exciting, interesting and highly encouraging environment. It also provides the opportunity to experience a vast number of Psychiatric sub-specialties and patient populations with excellent educational supervision and support throughout.
