The focus of this course is mental health, its scope, impact, community response, clinical treatment, and prevention in the context of public health. Mental health issues such as definitions of mental disorders, the epidemiology of mental illness, case management, community treatment, mental health research, and questions of policy are analysed and discussed in detail. Furthermore, the global burden of mental health and behavioural disorders are explored. GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES (COMPETENCES) Students who successfully complete this course are able to: - Gain knowledge about contemporary issues in mental health - Understand the scope, impact of mental health problems - Learn about community response, clinical treatment, and prevention utilized in mental health services - Describe mental disorders, - Understand the epidemiology of mental illness - Define case management - Learn about community treatment - Evaluate mental health research - Critically analyze mental health policy - Become aware of the global burden of mental health and behavioural disorders RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER COURSES Some topics of this course may overlap with Psychopathology . There are no prerequisites for this course. LEARNING / TEACHING METHOD The teaching method for this course includes formal lectures. METHOD OF ASSESSMENT Mid-term: 30% Final Exam: 40% Assignment: 30% ATTENDANCE Attendance is required. Students who attend less than 80% of classes, and whose submission of required work and attendance at examinations is minimal may receive an NG grade. Plagiarism (which also includes any kind of cheating in exams) is a disciplinary offence and will be dealt with accordingly. MAKE-UP POLICY There will be no make-ups for any of the laboratory work. There will be a make-up exam within a few days after the final exam, for people who missed either the midterm exam or the final exam with legitimate and documented excuses. Documentation should be provided to the Psychology Department Administration within 3 days of the scheduled exam that is missed, in order to be able to take the cumulative make-up exam. It is students’ responsibility to check with the Psychology department for the make-up schedule. CLASSROOM POLICIES Cell phones must be turned off during lectures. Audio and video recordings of lectures are not permitted. In addition, departmental classroom policies are followed. Students are responsible for complying with these rules. All requests for grade re-evaluations on exams, quizzes and class assignments must be made within three days of grade notification. There are no re-evaluations of previous work (i.e., exams, quizzes or class assignments) after final point calculations are posted at the end of the semester. Final grades are assigned solely based on points earned during the semester.
