GENERAL INFORMATION
The Department of Chemistry was founded in 1993 as one of five Departments of the Art and Science
Faculty, Karaelmas University. The education and research consists of the undergraduate (8 terms, 4 years) and
graduate (described in detail later) programs. There are 5 education and research divisions. 3 Professors, 2
Associate Professors, 9 Assistant Professors, 9 Research Assistant, 2 Specialist are employed, and about 190
undergraduate-course and about 30 graduate-course students studying at the department. The purpose of the
undergraduate programme is to educate chemists with natural-science emphasis for the occupation within society
where research, development, production, control and planning are significant. The Institute of Science of
Zonguldak Karaelmas University in cooperation with Chemistry Department offers the degrees of M.Sc. and
Ph.D. in chemistry.
Research Facilities
The research laboratories are equipped with the general facilities necessary for chemistry research. Some
particular instrumental strength are UV-VIS, FT-IR Spectrometers, Potentiostats, Polarimetry, Cyclic
voltammeter, Gas chromatograph and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). Major research fundings are
provided by Research Funds of Karaelmas University, T.C. Prime Ministry State Planning Organization (DPT),
and the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). Many collaborations are active
within the department and with other academic institutions in the Turkey and abroad.
