College Catalog Description:
A Comprehensive introduction to the use of personal computers for improving
productivity and problem solving. Primarily for non-computer majors and liberal
arts students (i.e. those majoring in areas such as humanities, arts, social and
behavioral sciences). Includes desktop configuration, word processing,
spreadsheets, presentation graphics, basics of personal computer organization,
directory structures, and file management. Optional topics may include database
concepts, Web page creation, Internet and IT resources, Web browsers, and use
of the Internet for research. Course cannot be applied to satisfaction of
graduation requirements in any computer-related degree program or certificate at
SCCC.
Course Philosophy:
The current and ever growing proliferation of software for the microcomputer
necessitates that students become aware of the uses and capabilities of the
microcomputer. The principles of readily available software and the use of files
are of prime importance to any user of a computer.
The rapid growth and current high level of computer use in education, business,
and home emphasizes the need for knowledge in the capabilities and limitations
of personal computers. This course is designed to impart an immediate
knowledge of software, hardware, and the relevant terminology.

Objectives:
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
demonstrate a working knowledge of computing concepts, components,
and operation to accomplish educational and career tasks:
 Perform basic operating system tasks using current operating
system, such as run a program, find a file, create a folder, copy a file
from hard drive to a floppy disk/CD-R/CD-RW
 Identify, explain the purpose of, and use the hardware components
of a computer, e.g. CPU, monitor, hard drive, floppy drive, keyboard,
printer, mouse, etc.
use appropriate components of productivity software involving word
processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and/or communications:
 Perform basic word processing operations, including: creating a new
document, performing simple editing, cutting and pasting, and
formatting operations on the document, printing, saving, and
retrieving.
 Perform basic spreadsheet operations, including: creating a new
worksheet, entering numeric values, labels, formulas, and simple
functions, perform simple editing and formatting operations on the
worksheet, printing, saving, and retrieving.
 Demonstrate skills with a minimal level database ranging from basic
knowledge to operations including: creating a simple table,
identifying fields and records, creating a simple query, and sorting.
 Demonstrate skills with presentation software ranging from basic
knowledge to being able to create and present a slide show.
 Perform integration between MS Office applications

on line catalogs, virtual libraries, the Internet, and World Wide Web:
 Connect to the Internet and the World Wide Web
 Access resources using the Internet and the World Wide Web

Course Outline
Student requirements:
1.
Complete all reading assignments prior to class.
2.
Submit all assignments when due.
3.
Complete all examinations and quizzes at the designated time.
4.
Submit all projects when due
Attendance:
All students are expected to attend every class session. Students are
responsible for all that transpires in class whether or not they are in attendance.
The college defines excessive absence or lateness as more than the equivalent
of one week of class meetings during the semester. Excessive absence or
lateness MAY lead to failure in the course or removal from the class roster.
Grading Policy:
1.
Test grades are not curved.
2.
Make-up tests are not given.
3.
Final grades are based on the following schedule:

4.
A grade of 0% will be given for missed exams, assignments, labs
and projects.
Class Rules:
Proper adult behavior is required of all students. NO EATING,
DRINKING, and SMOKING is permitted in class.

Computer Lab:
Tutors and Professional Assistants are available at posted times in the Academic
Skills/Computing Labs.
SCCC Student Code of Conduct:
Although not all-inclusive, the following actions, activities or behaviors are
expressly prohibited: “Unauthorized use of College computer facilities or
equipment, such as hacking; duplication or unauthorized use of copyrighted
software; destruction, unauthorized transfer or alteration of files; unauthorized
use of another individual’s identification, password or work.” Any student guilty of
the above may receive a failing grade in that class, be dismissed from the class
and/or be referred to the Dean of Students for further discipline proceedings.
Lab Assignments
Unit A, Skills Review (#1-7)
Units B - M, complete and submit Independent Challenges 1 and 2.
Guidelines in submitting work
1.
The Independent Challenges for each Unit must be submitted no later
than two classes following the one in which it last appears in the Course
Outline. The penalty for submitting the IC late is 50% of the grade earned.
If more than one class late, the grade will be 0%.
2.
No more than one Article Review may be submitted per class.
3.
Final Project will be due on the last day of class.
Article Review
1.
Review and critique one article related to each of the five general topics
covered in the course (Computer Concepts, Word, Excel, Power Point,
Access)
2.
A copy of the article must be submitted with the assignment
3.
Review : A paragraph describing the contents of the article.
Critique : A paragraph evaluating the theme of the article as to its
usefulness, validity, etc.
